Datsun/Nissan and toyota have been around for a long time in japan. So I guessing they were the original ricers. Honda started making cars a few decades after...so Im guessing hondas only become popular with the younger generation in japan that later exported it to the rest of the world.

But cars are not the only ricers in japan

oh geez man...if the country that made these cars and are the masters at modifying and tuning them for performance decide they want to make them as ugly as possible, I'm pretty certain they know what they're doing and why they're doing it
I actually like it cuz it's really over the top and VERY well-executed.

This isn't some ricer fan boy trying to bolt a GTR badge and body kit to his B13 with gypsum screws, these are master builders who went all out on their cars. You won't see Trini bodyshops really showing some balls to display extreme auto bodywork like this.
