Brent Stirton of South Africa has won first prize Nature Stories for the "Rhino Wars" series. The picture, from a game reserve in Natal, shows a rhino which had had its horn cut off by poachers using a chainsaw.

The victim was probably found by game wardens soon after which could explain why it is still alive.

Rhel faking sad.
But we trinis somewhat doing d same thing to our local wildlife. Cause as it stands the deer , agouti, ocelot and wildhog numbers are constantly dwindling. The SOE halted it for awhile but the same thing happening here in trinidad.

These things are usually for satisfying the demand of upscale markets...i.e. rich people.

Perhaps some of them need to have something(s) cut off their person as well...:|

very true, what's sad is if you were to post this of FB their would be an uproar of disgust and condemnation however so many fail to see how we are damaging our home land... i.e. our case of this rhino

no one drop of rain thinks its responsible for the flood, especially in these recent times... i cant stop a mob by myself however i can choose to say no.... probably the locals poor, uneducated and a million other excuses but if they say no and protect their own... which rich man you think getting to send poachers in there to to that? just another excuse and weakness to be blaming rich people alone...

but similar thing happening right here.
the man that sells poultry supplies on the right hand side after the savannah in ralph narine trace, south oropouche beat his dog in the head with a piece of 2*4 till the dog stupid & have it there still. Dog face messed up & cant eat & stuff.
Why he beat the dog: dog get away & kill some of his ducks. Why wasnt the dog secured properly & fed properly in the first place? he know to secure it good when he beat it though, then you wonder why I have no sympathy for pitbulls that maul the fcuk outa their owners.

Once there is the demand, poachers will continue to do it.

Ultimately the buyers are just as guilty for allowing this industry to propagate.

what you consider wild?
chickens / goats / cows / fish all originated in some type of enclosure, just waiting to be "harvested"?

That rhino pic is sad brah.
Nothing's wrong with hunting wild meat for food. There are laws in place for a reason and if observed by all, wildlife will be preserved.

exactly, "if there's a demand there will be a supply", is that what people ready to sell themselves to now, is that what we will allow to be the core principle in today's world... then they complain about rich people think they're naive and exploit them.... i know no one here maybe be able able to help that rhino or stop that madness from in trinidad... but it seems that supply and demand sheit has conquered alot of people already..... there is a demand for cheap labour so we would that mean we cant stop child labour?
