is serena 7 seater are good vans?

Uncle has a 3rd generation going into its 5th year. So far no issues.
Very reliable, usual maintenance.

Yup decent van- adequate space, comfortable ride, not to bad on fuel either and FU parts readily available if you speaking of FU.

Me personally, I would leave my car the way it came from the manufacturer. Remember a lot of thought was put into the design of the car and the engine by the engineers/designers and most likely they had a fair idea about what they were doing. I could put my faith in there hands with respect to this thermostat issue

Exactly.
a quicker opening thermo, and no thermo have the same result. The coolant does not stay in block long enough to dissipate heat.
If you have other problems, the thermostat is not the fix.
