If you're going to buy the new MacBook pro retina I suggest you upgrade everything to the fullest, ifixit did the year down and said its the hardest laptop to repair/upgrade yet, even the ram is soldered in.

I'd go for the extra RAM alone as that is soldered. The SSD isn't soldered and someone will eventually make SSDs with this updated propriety connector.

Who converts videos to put on their iDevice anymore? There are apps like Oplayer and Goodplayer etc.

And  at the big uproar due to a lack of an optical drive in the new mbp. Only in a country like Trinidad where there are still uses for cd/dvd technologies would it be needed. and seriously? djs? a dvd holds a max of 9GBs.. possibly bluray with a max of 25GB flash drives go up to sizes like 128GB? (and i really don't recommend using that though for delicate stuff) anyway, it seriously makes no sense hogging around dead tech. They sell an external drive though, just in case you do need it. I've been optical drive less for over a year now and only once I had to use an optical drive to burn something to submit, because they only accept cds... see where this is going? and i didn't even talk about access times etc.

I'm surprised no one said anything about the lacking VGA port.

A set of rendered photos depict a what fully-assembled version of Apple's 2012 iPhone may look like, based on previously leaked components [updated].

The renders, which were published by Chinese site iPhone中文网 (Google Translation, via MacOtakara), are based on rumors that have suggested the next iPhone will have a smaller dock, larger speakers and a metal back. While the original report was duped by the pictures, they originally stem from a Flickr user, who explained they were modeled in Rhinoceros 3D and are an authentic looking forgery.

The renders also depict the rumored longer 4-inch screen that some insiders believe is bound for the sixth-generation iPhone.

The images are based on a purported back cover part for the next-generation iPhone that appeared on line last week. Both alleged leaks feature a headphone jack on the bottom of the device, a smaller "mini-dock" and larger speakers. In late May, a similar-looking part also surfaced online, though that part contained a suspicious looking font that called into question its authenticity.

The original report suggested the renders could be legitimate, noting they did not seem to have a "trace" of editing in Adobe Photoshop, though it did hedge the veracity of the photos by labeling the images as unconfirmed. The publication acknowledged the photos were "really incredible," while calling them the "most-possible" leak of the next-generation iPhone.

Microsoft just updated its My Xbox LIVE app to include functionality for controlling content on your Xbox from your iPhone (or iPod touch). The app previously let you access Xbox LIVE achievements, connect with friends, and change your 3D avatar, and now it lets iPhone users “connect, control and discover content” from their console through a number of new features. Among them are a remote with “play, pause, fast forward and rewind” and a new Quickplay list of recently viewed Xbox content. The update also brings high-resolution images and improved authentication for iPad, but no support for the new controls.

Earlier this month, Microsoft previewed a new AirPlay-like wireless streaming app called “SmartGlass” that will allow users to share video content from their mobile devices (iOS included) with their Xbox. The previewed app will also include integration with Xbox games, but Microsoft only mentioned Windows 8 support for those features.

A full list of new features in version 1.5 of the My Xbox LIVE app is below:

What’s New in Version 1.5

iPhone:
• Use your iPhone with your Xbox to connect, control and discover content on your console. Connect your iPhone for access to a quick list of your most recent console activity. Control your content with play, pause, fast forward and rewind media controls. Find fresh entertainment to play in the new Discover section.
• Improved Authentication to make it more stable

iPad:
• Improved Authentication to make it more stable
• iPad high-resolution images

It is not only in Trinidad. I suggest you speak to your data capped friends in the US :D . You may not need optical media but some people do. Your own example proves you needed it.

^^ technically apple right yuhno...

Me personally havnt used my odd on my toshiba lappy since I got it, my sis uses it to watch dvd's but I could replace that with a torrent. In car, I only use my cd for compitions with iasca (even they offer a usb/ipod format).

Even alpine went ODD less on their decks, just the other features sucked.

Apple aint the first to do it, but maybe the first to do it successfully.

^ I dont mind it not having an optical drive
I have a netbook with no optical drive and my desktop workstation doesnt have an optical drive either

anyway when Apple first went with floppy less systems people made a big fuss, then they went with slot operated optical drives and people went ballistic.

almost ALL PC netbooks today come without optical drives - I really don't see why that's a deal breaker - a few maybe, but not for a majority
esp when there is the external drive option

Or maybe Apple and Apple fans are way ahead of the rest in their thinking.
Throw away the old tech and embrace the way the world is going.

You damn well know we are heading towards a world with little physical media. Just that Apple is getting you there NOW instead of waiting another 10 years.

Look how long people stuck clinging to floppy drives when even a 64MB flash drive was so superior. If Apple didn't push the industry away from floppies, we might still be using a new improved version of it.

Now, sit back and watch PC companies also move away from optical drives in the next couple years and embrace Intel's Thunderbolt.

you serious?

the thing is thinner, much much faster, better looking, retina is WOW and the USB optical drive is small

what you use your optical drive for?

most of my clients transfer documents via cd, drawings. even when tendering, because of the size of the files you are asked to submit it on a cd...some of these companies are so backward they still use office 2000 and 2003.....

the way i configured my network at the office, only managers can use flash drives on the systems/cd/any form of removable media....i have actually removed burning software off the machines so that i can protect sensitive information and prevent viruses etc

I understand it's thinner etc but right now for what i use my mac for, the current does it. Probably next year sometime i will upgrade, let all the lil bugs be sorted out lol

only things i can think off is lowered cost -- (not really a factor in this case lol)
quieter system performance
less metal inside the case so airflow and cooling shud be improved
lower power draw as it is one less device connected to the system bus

and dats abt it

i surprised know how apple is dat dey didnt offter two models one with the optical drive and ethernet port and one without all dat "fluff"

It shouldn't be though. There is a thunderbolt adaptor for Ethernet. If you add that and the SuperDrive it works out cheaper than a similarly specced normal Mbp.

Whether u fellas want to admit it or not...apple is a dictator....sometimes dictatorship can be good in the business world but only when u dictate the industry and not the people/consumers....

They brought out the camera kit for iPad which had the USB connector that USED to read flash drives and other USB devices....apple did an update and intentionally bricked it....now u can't read a flash drive on it....why break something for spite that was working GREAT??? U can argue that the camera connection kit wasn't advertised as a flash drive reader but the point is that it used to do it and they themselves break it with their stupid update

Newest version of Mac mini doesn't come with an optical drive neither....how stupid...so u can't even burn a cd on what sposed to be a deskto pc...yesss a lot of y'all claim to not use cd or DVDs anymore but daz alyuh....not the whole world...so u gonna make me have to go buy a USB deck now cuz I bought an apple Pc? And force me to use iTunes (which is so complicated and dumb IMO) in order to get my vids and songs?

No Ethernet port so now I hadda make sure wherever I go has wifi or else I'm facked...restricted features for iPhones prior to i4 and also all iPads before the 2012 version....aren't these devices capable enough to run the full updated ios6 with all it's features too??? Why limit me from your content from YOUR OWN devices that you make apple???

Y'all have to be d biggest fans ever to not be able to see these things yesss....jus now they will take out USB so u can't use flash drives or other USB things just cuz their keyboards and mouse are Bluetooth an they will force u to do all ur $hit via iCloud??? And guess what....when that day comes u ppl wil say "hoorayyyy apple"... :?

don't get me wrong for someone upgrading from the older mbp ie. early 2011 or no-unibody, it's a great upgrade and improvement but i have a late 2011 unibody and the upgrade doesn't seem worth it to be just yet.....

picking up the thunderbolt to ethernet adapter isn't hard to do if i do upgrade but like all new things, there are always bugs to sort out....i'm liking the hdmi port and air mirroring on the new os is something great to look fwd to

Change works for a good and a bad ... time will tell on this MBP issue.

And while some embrace it and others lash out against it;

'Different strokes for different folks'

@ casper

It's not about users here being the 'biggest fans' ever (that's a bit harsh). Maybe they are open to change and this change caters to their needs.

You even cycled from BB > Android > iOS, not so?

And your present device is the 4S ?

So at the end of the day, it's in favor of some and then in non-favor for others. Like how my Window$ PC is what works for me right now :D

love it or hate it.. computing is going to the clouds, the days of storing data on your machine is gone.. the days for burning cd's are numbered... everything in less than 5 years will be in the cloud... software, datam your personal files. everything... lots of people are currently deleting all thier media on their machines cayse they can store them online and access it from everything from your car stereo, mobile device and home computer... why burn a cd when you can upload it to a cloud based storage and then share a million times or access from anywhere.. i've had the same stack of 50 blank cd's last me the last 5 years cause i prefer to share stuff via cloud based storage than burn a cd.. hate or love it.. this is the futures guys.

Sigh

'Fanboy' ? ... No, I only own an iPhone and I am comfortable with my Windows 7 set up.

I was just trying to point out to you that for the people who are satisfied with the product, the lack of the mentioned item, is no issue for them as they really would not have used it. There have alternatives.

But I don't understand why all the fight down, Are you going to purchase the device? I am not. :D

Upset much :?:
