What benifits do we get with the nano sim as opposed to the sim cards we have now and who came up with it? Genuine question here.

Apple pushed it through as the new standard for the industry. It was ratified by other manufacturers like Nokia, Samsung, rim etc.

I can't remember the supposed benefits. If apple didn't do it there would have been another form factor as others were working on a new smaller sim as well.

This is off top of my head but ars technica and macrumors as well as other websites will have info in more detail.

Or why the need to go from the micro sim to the nano sim?

I would be grateful for some assistance on how to tether it (if it can be tethered that is).

Operating System v7.1 is required for mobile hotspot, and the 9300 model is not supported for OS7.1

So, in short, no

Digicel carries the Blackberry Curve 9320 (which runs Blackberry OS v7.1). If I purchase this phone, theoretically I should be able to tether my Ipad through Blackberry's mobile hotspot. Correct?

Yes. I have a 9810 and use its mobile hotspot feature to share hi speed data with an iPhone so should be the same for you.

More space, smaller phones.

The current nano sim is Apple's design. They jumped production of the iPhone 5 before it was made a standard... thereby making it the standard now.

Apple has lifted patents on the design for anyone to use, which new phones are being made with in the coming year or two.

In other words it does everything the current sim cards do then? Just checking because if its a case of making a phone .01 mm thinner then I agree with what casper said.

It's also 6mm shorter so that's 6mm more for battery or a radio or whatever else..

pressure's good, forces carriers like bmobile to push forward and capitalize on innovation, much like how they're being forced to upgrade their network to 4G.

the decision to go with the smaller sim was made with the same intention when they made the micro.. it allows more space for other peripherals, lower power consumption etc, even though the change to nano sim from micro sim is significantly less than it was from regular to micro, it's still extra space to work with which contributes in some small way to the iPhone 5 being 20% thinner.

I posted a few months ago that there was a sudden uptick in carriers buying up millions of nano sims...it's the future, deal with it. Small internals is ALWAYS better, so I dunno how anyone could get vex with this...just because APPLE did it first? Come on now

i not vex with apple for making a nano sim...its actually pretty cool...but the fact remains is that for 3rd world countries like ours whose carriers dont have the technology to support it...it just makes things harder for us cuz honestly i dont see b-mobile gettin it THAT soon cuz its not a matter of just cutting existing sims anymore...its a totally different card all together they gotta get now just for this phone alone...look how long we took to get 3g...and b-mobile still in the process of working on 3g network...which is a big upgrade for them...i could be wrong but i dont see them doing a next majopr upgrade in the near future as they now did this...just my thoughts

also what will happen to the digicel ppl if they arent carrying iphone 5's??? they basically have no reason to supply these cards cuz none of their present phones have it...and the newer phones they may be gettin next year will more than likely have micro sims rather than nano...

someone said that nano sims will be the standard within a year??? really??? iphone 4 came out since 2010 and how many other phones do u know are using micro sims??? the majority are still using regular size sims...STILL....

so in essence as i orignally stated...all this headache with some of alyuh in here beating up with "how i gonna get this iphone to work without d sim"...and..."ah wonder when bmobile gonna get it"...and "damn just spoke to my digicel rep and they said they dont have plans on gettin this nano sim" all because apple wanted to be different and because of that...3rd world countries seein pressure....

there have been programs around to put 9 phone numbers on one sim card for years

im sure in the near future that some (most likely chinese) company will release a way for individuals to put their present full size sim info onto a nano sim.

It was being pushed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.

Just like the move to Micro-sim. That was also a ETSI standard. You guys living under a rock?

it works great! It gives me 50% extra battery. But the only con is the case is too big when the phone goes into it.
