Met Office: Showers to continue today
By Gyasi Gonzales gyasi.gonzales@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Apr 27, 2013 at 10:14 PM ECT
Story Updated: Apr 27, 2013 at 10:14 PM ECT
It may not yet be the start of this year’s rainy season, but it certainly feels like it over the last three days, with heavy showers being reported all over Trinidad and Tobago, accompanied by flash floods in several parts of south Trinidad yesterday.

According to the Met Office, the almost continuous rainfall is expected to last another 24 hours.

Downtown Port of Spain was spared a heavy deluge yesterday, unlike the day before when hundreds of commuters were stranded in the capital for a few hours due to flooding along South Quay.

There was a report however of a landslide along Albert Lane in Belmont.

In south Trinidad, there were reports that Mosquito Creek had flooded, leaving several motorists trapped in a traffic jam that up to 5 p.m. was backed up to Gulf City, La Romaine, according to tweets from motorists stuck in the traffic.

By 5.30 p.m., the floodwater had receded off the Creek.

Other areas in South, including Palo Seco, Woodland, La Romaine, Penal, San Fernando, Siparia, Saltmine Trace, Mon Desir, Gonzalez Village and Guapo, also experienced flooding yesterday.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) reminded the public that “in its role as the co-ordinator of emergencies/crises, they have already alerted the first-responder agencies so that assistance can be rendered to affected persons.

The field officers from the disaster management units of the municipal corporations and CEPEP (Community-based Environmental Protection and Enhancement Programme) have been assisting with clean-up efforts”.

The ODPM said they will continue to monitor the situation and update the public accordingly, and citizens are asked to remain vigilant and are reminded to contact 511 if they have been adversely affected.
Met Services said yesterday’s heavy rainfall was due to the presence of a low-level trough which remains stationary over the Caribbean region.

It added that due to the amount of rainfall that occurred between Friday, yesterday and with rain expected today as well, “the possibility of localised street and flash flooding, as well as landslides/landslips, is likely in the vicinity of prolonged rainfall or heavy downpours”.

this picture was posted yesterday by the "new" PNM abroad; this was NOT the case yesterday, but as typical, a bunch of people who are not currently in Trinidad, or probably don't know where Gasparillo is, used it as an opportunity to bray about politics

Flood Bulletin being issued at this time........

FLOOD BULLETIN 1

RIVERINE FLOOD ALERT!

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is issuing a riverine flood alert for Trinidad, having regard to the most recent rainfall event associated with the presence of a low to mid level trough persisting over the Caribbean region.

Reports from the Water Resources Agency indicate that water levels in the nation’s major rivers in Central Trinidad are significantly high and may reach threshold levels as a result of run-off from the current and forecast rainfall activity.

Meteorological Forecasts and data obtained from Numerical Weather Prediction Models indicate that further rainfall activity is expected over the next 12 to 24 hours with rainfall accumulation anticipated to be between 25-40 millimeters.

Given the additional rainfall predicted for Trinidad and Tobago and the occurrence of high tides at 6:35 pm. today, the possibility of river overtopping is real and imminent.

As oppose to street/flash flooding, riverine flooding is more widespread and prolonged.

Citizens in general, and those who live in the Caroni River Basin in particular, are asked to be on the alert for rising river levels and possible overspill. All necessary measures MUST be taken to preserve life and property.

WE STRONGLY UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING AT THIS TIME.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is closely monitoring weather conditions and will issue another bulletin at 6:00 pm today or sooner if warranted.

Passed through Mon Desir earlier, saw what looked like a newly formed dam in the flat. Rivers filled to capacity and noisy as hell.
Anymore rain and Sparrow junction gonna get it live and I suppose Silverstream was underwater last night. I real sorry for people who live Silverstream yes.

Flood Bulletin Update being issued at this time.....

FLOOD BULLETIN 3

FURTHER RAINFALL EXPECTED OVER THE NEXT 12 - 24 HOURS

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service forecast further rainfall over the next 12 - 24 hours. Meteorological Forecasts and data obtained from Numerical Weather Prediction Models indicate that additional rainfall activity, with estimates of between 15 - 25 millimeters of rainfall, is expected over the stipulated time frame.

Although, water levels are approvingly receding, the already swollen water courses can be easily recharged to threshold levels with the added rainfall and already saturated soils. The occurrence of high tides at approximately 7:29 p.m. this evening will compound any negative development in this regard.

Given that some areas already experienced inundation and the forecast conditions, the riverine flood alert will be maintained throughout the day.

Citizens in general and those who live in the Caroni River Basin in particular are asked to be on the alert for rising river levels and possible overspill. All necessary measures MUST be taken to preserve life and property.

WE STRONGLY UNDERSCORE THAT TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IS NOT UNDER ANY TROPICAL STORM THREAT, WATCH OR WARNING AT THIS TIME.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service is closely monitoring weather conditions and will issue another bulletin at 6:00 p.m. this evening or sooner if warranted.
