DIY....Installing and wiring fogs lamps

Postby nissan4life » May 12th, 2013, 7:48 pm

So i got fogs for my CS the other day and realise the car didnt have any original wiring for the fog lamps,
This diagram and write up should work for any fogs you want to instal, whether it be universal or orginal fogs that you purchased and realise the car doesnt have any wiring for fog lamps.
You are goin to have to get
relay (4 or 5 pin) with harness
3 prong switch
some female spades
fuse holder with 20 amp fuse
about 4 yards of 14 gauge wiring,i used two colours red and green..

Following the diagram which i stole from the internet you should be able to wire your fogs but here is my write up
I started by wiring my relay..You are going to have 5 wires on the harness for the relay
Thick red wire which leads to # 30 on relay this goes to your battery
Thick white wire which leads to # 86 on relay this goes to switch and is your hot wire
White wire which leads to # 87 on the relay this wire is to be extended and leads to +ve wire on your fogs(-ve wire on fogs goes to ground on car)
Black wire which should lead back to # 85 on the relay and should be attached to a ground
The extra blue wire should be left alone because we dont need it for this application. Heres a pic, wires alil messie but i was just testing wiring before securing evrything.

After i extended all my wires and ensured i grounded the second wire on the fog light socket to the ground of the car
i Ran a red wire from engine bay tru firewall to the switch inside the car..I taped my green wire into the hot wire fro the park lights as seen below
DSC06746.JPG

NB.. plz dont run it to wires in front the car that leads to park bulbs,i tired and it blew the fuse for the park lights twice.lol
Its only then it hit me,that i had too much load there and would need to source the park light wire before it reaches the fuse box.found that below the steering wheel.Tested with a tester by turning on park lights and just touch with the pin to see which one was current wire for park lights
My green wire is taped into stripe green and white
The reason i tapped into another power source is because i dont want the fogs to be forgotten on and run down the battery. This way the fogs can only come on if
1,the parking lights are on and
2, the switch is on
If either one is off the fogs wont come on.That way even if i forget fogs switch on and i switch off the car the parking lights will come off and so will the fogs.

The red wire is the load that goes to the relay and is the trigger to switch on,the green wire goes to another 12v power source i sent it to my parking lights and the black wire it the ground which was secured below steering column
Parking lights on,switch lit and fogs on

Installed my switch in a place i dont want ppl asking "what does this button do" and pressing it.

Good write up and well described and illustrated.
Although I do not tap from the fuse box anymore , reason being those wires are tool small and short to splice and join.
Also if any problems should occure such to cause overheating or fire to harness this fuse box is also the ETAC ECU which controls most of the electricals such as wipers, locks , turnsignals etc and replacement is just not a fuse box , its an ECU.

I will usually tap from the battery with a fuse. To trigger when the parklights is on I will power the relay coil by tapping the park light itself in the bonnet.

Also it is recommended you crimp or solder your wires.

Yeah anthony thanks for the advice,i tapped from battery with a fuse and was tapping from the parklight but it kept blowing the left side fuse everytime i switched on and off. Where it is tapped it doesnt have any relays for my ecu,My ECU relay is in the engine bay with some other fuses and relays
I crimped the spades but had no soldering iron so electric tape for that.

what nissan did is a very simple job for tuners with some basic electrical know how.
The most difficult part is pulling apart the car's trim and running the wires, switches , relay and harness
to look very neat like factory oem but this is not difficult.

^^^^He set it up just like OEM too.

I have the factory switch but haven't figured out how to have the light on it come on when the fogs/switch is on.

BTW I prefer having the fogs on without the park lights as long as the light on the switch works.

yea fellas thank as anthony said basic install, hardest part was removing cars trims and neatening up and making sure all wires out of sight
Zeroone i ran it to parklights caz i really dont want to forget them on if i just run it as a straight switch
All switches are basically power in,power out and ground. You said you have the factory switch which i believe is 4 pins and basically it should be the same thing
power in, power out, ground and illumination power(for you to see the light on the switch)
If it is an electrican ran the switch for you then he jus left that pin unplugged, you want to wire that pin to anything with a 12v current that comes on when parklights or headlights come on(eg wire to gear shifter bulb or any illuminated light source)
Anthony should be able to verify this as he seems to have a better knowledge on electrical that i do.
