day after violent protests over the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the death of Trayvon Martin, city leaders and activists urged peace even as a leading civil rights activist said demonstrations will continue all summer – starting with vigils in 100 cities on Saturday.

“We don’t want anyone hurt. We don’t want any cars broken into, and we don’t want any damages to business,” Eddie Jones of the Los Angeles Civil Rights Association told NBCLosAngeles.com.

L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and LAPD Chief Charlie Beck called for calm in a Tuesday afternoon news conference after a second night of unrest in the city in which 14 people were arrested, most for failing to disperse after people clashed with police, attacked a news crew and threw rocks.

Beck said lawbreakers wouldn’t be tolerated. "You come here again tonight, you will go to jail," he said.

"We are calling on people to practice peace," Garcetti said, “to not let the dialogue sparked by Martin's death be silenced by any violence."

The warnings and pleas appeared to have been effective. A peaceful crowd of about 200 marched along downtown streets Tuesday evening, blocking traffic, the Los Angeles Times reported on its website. But the group had dispersed by 8:30 p.m. (11:30 p.m. ET), the Times reported.

City leaders in Oakland, Calif., also called for protesters to be peaceful after a Monday night demonstration sank into chaos. Nine people were arrested and several businesses were vandalized. A businessman dining in a restaurant that was vandalized said a protester assaulted a waiter.

Interim Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent said Tuesday that his department was caught off guard and added no staffing ahead of the protests that erupted Saturday because he was unaware that the Zimmerman jury was deliberating on the weekend, NBCBayArea.com reported.

Meanwhile, the Rev. Al Sharpton announced vigils across the country that will be followed by marches in Tallahassee, Fla., and Washington, D.C.

“Florida will be the battleground of a new civil rights movement,” Sharpton said during a news conference with other clergy outside the Justice Department headquarters.

“We are not having a two- or three-day anger fit,” said Sharpton, who is president of the National Action Network and also hosts a show on MSNBC. “This is a movement for social justice.”

Sharpton said the nationwide action has two goals: urging the Justice Department to move forward with a civil-rights probe of Zimmerman and repealing “Stand Your Ground” self-defense laws that some say made it difficult to win a conviction in the case.

Rallies and vigils have been held by Martin supporters in major cities since a Florida jury found Zimmerman not guilty on Saturday night. They have been mostly peaceful, though 14 people were arrested Monday night in Los Angeles after a gathering descended into chaos with some people throwing rocks, attacking people and clashing with police, NBCLosAngeles.com reported.

Sharpton also urged all protesters to remain peaceful, saying Martin’s name should not be “smeared with reckless violence.”

'Trayvon Martin could have been me' - Barack Obama

President Barack Obama has said that "Trayvon Martin could have been me, 35 years ago", in his first comments on the case since last week's verdict.

The unarmed black 17-year-old was shot and killed in Florida in February 2012.

George Zimmerman, 29, said he opened fire on the teenager in self-defence and was acquitted of murder by a Florida court last week.

In an unexpected press call, Mr Obama said very few black men in the US had not experienced racial profiling.

Mr Obama said the pain that African Americans felt around the case came from the fact that they viewed it through "a set of experiences and a history that doesn't go away".

He said African Americans were also keenly aware of racial disparities in the application of criminal laws.

"That all contributes to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different," Mr Obama said.

He shared his experiences of being racially profiled in the past, such as being followed while out shopping.

"There are very few African American men who haven't had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars.

"There are very few African Americans who haven't had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she has a chance to get off."
'Soul-searching'

Mr Obama also hailed the "incredible grace and dignity" of Trayvon Martin's parents in the way they reacted to the verdict.

Calling for "soul-searching" from Americans on issues of race, he also sounded a hopeful note, saying that race relations were improving with each generation.

Saturday's not-guilty verdict for George Zimmerman from the all-female jury of six prompted nationwide protests, with further demonstrations planned for this weekend.

Mr Obama called for the protests to remain peaceful, saying any violence "dishonours what happened to Trayvon Martin".

He said that although criminal matters and law enforcement were traditionally dealt with on a state and not a federal level, it would be useful to examine some state and local laws to see if they encourage confrontation in certain situations.

On Wednesday, US Attorney General Eric Holder cited the case as he urged a nationwide review of "stand your ground" laws, such as those in place in Florida, which permit the use of deadly force if a person feels seriously threatened.

The issue was never raised during the trial, though the judge included a provision about the law in her instructions to the jury, allowing it to be considered as a legitimate defence.

I respect what the president said and I echo the point that the US, like other countries in the West, still has serious racial discrimination issues especially when it pertains to blacks.

However the Zimmerman trial is not the best example of racial discrimination those who beat that drum could use. Zimmerman has been independently profiled as not being racist by the FBI and the jury's decision came more in line with Florida's strong self-defense laws and the Zimmerman's attorneys ability to show him acting in accord with them.

The president's message that I listened to was a sobering one, but it could be use as a justification of the violent reaction of the public. More black ppl die at the hand of other black ppl than by some racist white ppl. There needs to be a dispassionate look at the verdict and the issues real ethnic relations, and not this rush to act on emotions void of reasoning.

Well I doubt waiting for the best example will make things better faster. Fact is the case highlights issues including racial ones as well as state laws which can be used for ill will. It's why even after the verdict the government is already looking at those laws.

Also saying that the president's msg could be used to incite further violence is like saying your pleas to ignore emotions will lead to more violence by persons doing more racial profiling and acting violently on it. Basically you can't just pick out the negative part n ignore Obama's message to protest without violence.

There is need to deal with racial discrimination and black on black crime in the US.

The Zimmerman trial from what has come out, has nothing to do with either. The Left and certain quarters of the media have been bringing a racial spin to this unfortunate event. The more blacks continue to be baited into issues irrelevant to the cause and not address the more substantial issues, the more they will be none the better.

Nah I think you can be objective and multitask. This is a seperste issue from the ones you brought up and thats fine. there are multiple issues to deal with and they can be done at the same time.

Also say no race applies here is to simply turn a blind eye. It's what us blacks like to do both home and abroad. I not condoning the violent protests but you can't tell me race didn't play a huge role. The whole thing started out of racial profiling in the first place.

Juror: George Zimmerman 'got away with murder'

A juror in the trial of a Florida neighbourhood watchman who killed an unarmed black teenager has come forward to say he "got away with murder".

But the 36-year-old, named as Maddy in an ABC News interview, said they could not find him guilty based on the law.

The only non-white member of the six-woman jury, she suggested the trial had been little more than a sham.

George Zimmerman was cleared after shooting dead unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in February 2012.

There were nationwide protests following his acquittal of murder and manslaughter charges earlier this month. He claimed self-defence.
'Publicity stunt'

Maddy, a mother of eight who had recently moved from Illinois to Florida, said she feels she owes an apology to the dead 17-year-old's parents.

Maddy Juror

"I felt like I let a lot of people down, and I'm thinking to myself, 'did I go the right way? Did I go the wrong way?'" she told ABC News' Good Morning America programme.

But she said that based on instructions from the judge, she could not convict Mr Zimmerman under Florida law.

"That's where I felt confused, where if a person kills someone, then you get charged for it," Maddy said.

"But as the law was read to me, if you have no proof that he killed him intentionally, you can't say he's guilty."

Known as Juror B29, she said she initially voted to convict the 29-year-old neighbourhood watchman of second-degree murder, but changed her mind after nine hours of discussing evidence on the second day of deliberations.

"I was the juror that was going to give them the hung jury," she said. "I fought to the end."

Maddy, who is of Puerto Rican background, said the trial was "a publicity stunt", because she believes Florida laws provided no opportunity to convict. But she said Mr Zimmerman will still to be judged.

"George Zimmerman got away with murder, but you can't get away from God. And at the end of the day, he's going to have a lot of questions and answers he has to deal with."

Earlier this month, another juror - known only as B37 - told broadcaster CNN that she believed Mr Zimmerman had good intentions, but events "just went terribly wrong".
