ALL the restaurants in two of the major malls located in San Fernando were ordered closed yesterday by the Public Health Department of the San Fernando City Corporation.
Accompanied by San Fernando Mayor, Dr Navi Muradali, public health inspectors (PHIs), led by John Ramkhelewan, and Alexander Ramnath visited Edan’s Centre and RRM Plaza at Harris Promenade and High Street, San Fernando.
The restaurants ordered closed were: Gil’s, The Grille Shop, The Vine, The Chulha, City Grillers, Local Flavours, Shanghai Delights, Damascus Grill, Curry Hut and Yong Yi Restaurant.
Hot dogs and chicken sandwiches were seized from two kiosks, JDees Sweethands and Patsy’s Snackbar, for lack of food warmers.
Those kiosks were also ordered closed.
However, the food outlets at RRM Plaza were allowed to sell out the food already cooked yesterday before closing today.
Muradali said: “The foods being sold was already cooked and they were ordered to desist from cooking any more and to close thereafter.”
Poor kitchen conditions, absence of updated food badges, cockroaches, and improper storage of food were among some of the major public health violations.
The outlets will not be allowed to be reopened until further inspection can take place.
The visit was part of the corporation’s public health education and awareness exercise to ensure safe health practices in the city.
On Tuesday, thousands of dollars worth in food items were seized from Ju Jain Supermarket at Keate Street, San Fernando next to National Cinema.
Ramnath said the 20-plus items taken included chocolate chip cookies, macaroni, cheese, oats, whip cream and corn flour. The items were on shelves being offered for purchase.
Weevils were found in several oats containers and some of the items were expired since April last year.
