What do you mean tranny gave up on you ..lack of fluid made the tranny seize up ? but once you put oil in again it started to work again?Im curious because mine give up on me yesterday, im now looking for sum1 to send it by to fix or buy a whole new engine & tranny, :(

Dear Readers, I am new on this site, and reaching out to you from Curacao, Netherlands Antilles. I have a problem. I own a 2004 mitsubishi Colt 2004, with a CVT tranny like you call it. It started hesitating to pickup. Later that same day I was driving uphill when it happened. The car snapped. I won't go forward nor backward. I put it in gear R or D but nothing. One thing I noticed that the Neutral light flashes. What do you experts think is going on. Please help me out here.

What do you mean by 'snapped'?

It seems to me that your transmission is on it's way out. You may have to bebuild the transmission. CVT is a delicate transmission and not as durable as others. Drive it with care, treat it with care and it will give you good service. When last have you changed the transmission fluid? What fluid do you use?

I bought the car from Japan. I did not change the tranny oil.

^^^Well you should have changed it if the time between purchasing it from japan and when it 'snapped' was exceeding 20,000km and in my opinion the belt in your transmission is what has 'snapped' so the car will not move at all.
You have to get that transmission rebuilt.

Diamond Motors has it(gallon only it blue bottle) for $402.50 but you can get it on the outside for around $300. You will also get it sold by the quart on the outside. Check Autotune Supplies in St. Helena.
A drain and refill takes about 4-5 quarts and a transmission flush will take about 8-9 quarts.Whatever Mitsubishi oil you purchase, ensure it's SP III grade
This is what DM has presently and what you would get nowadays at auto shops/parts places around the country.

hmm i just had the same problem as elcot, sent my car to service first time since i purchased the used car locally and the mechanic used what was on the dipstick 'Dia Queen SPIII' tranny lasted 2 days of very light driving (not even half tank). I was getting a hessitation below 40km/h and after that speed it would work fine.

In any case since it died last week i've drained the fluid according to the service manual specs and found some nice chunks of metal attached to the magnetic drain plug ...Guessing that's a bad thing.

Was hoping to find a replacement CVT Tranny or convert to manual ... advice on the conversion is appreciated cuz i've been reading forums / sites like crazy and got a short list of what i need... but noone seems to have the f5m41 gearbox (atleast the places i've checked)

Chunks of metal you got there are because the clutches in your transmission burned.

Well a few chunks fell off and into the fluid. That should not be, more so as you change the fluid frequently.
