National cyclist Clinton Grant was struck by a vehicle this morning while cycling, the exact details are not known at this time. It is understood that he passed away during emergency surgery at the Port of Spain general hospital about an hour ago. He was a Fatima College old boy and an insurance agent at Sagicor as well as a champion cyclist who did his country proud.

He was coaching this morning when he got hit, I think his student was the daughter of the owner of FireOne Fireworks. I knew him for about 27 years too, his mom taught me in primary school.

RIP to the guy

Hate to sound insensitive but those highway cyclists, where are they supposed to ride? Within the shoulder or on the line because many a time you see them riding in pairs and some are on the line and deviating into the left lane.

no idea but he was hit on the shoulder,
he was an experienced cyclist and would be very aware and know to stay close on shoulder to avoid cars

Racing Cyclists can ride anywhere in trini excluding the Solomon HH, pt lisas est and private roads. The newer highways only have signs up but no laws as yet covers it. Most cyclists are skilled and normally ride in groups. Some clubs don't allow under 16s to ride unsupervised.
Too many asswipe drivers have no respect for other road users.

The person who hit Clinton was apparently distracted, he leaned over to go into his glove compartment and lost control.

Still no excuse in the UK this driver would have been charged and have his permit taken away.

quoted for truth.

but then again even in the UK you can't cycle on motorways. I think they need to seriously reconsider letting cyclists ride on the highway. Perhaps put them on some less busier road?

it really sucks to go out of timing on a long weekend; hope you can rally through and get things sorted out on Tuesday. All the best.

The T&T road laws states that cyclists can ride 2 abreast in a lane.

ie a pair of cyclists can take up lane just like a car, in other words
cyclists have pretty much same rights/courtesies as any other vehicle....

oh that sucks. Unusual for a cyclist to get hit but it happens often in certain states in the US.
