Hinds disgusted by rastaman's Kamla kiss
By Anna Ramdass anna.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Nov 23, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

Story Updated: Nov 23, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

The move of a rasta to kiss the palm of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar during her tour of flooded areas in Maraval on Monday made Opposition Senator Fitzgerald Hinds upset and sick.

So disgusted was Hinds, he said, if he had the opportunity he would cut off the man's dreadlocks.

"Yesterday, I saw one little idiot dreadlocked boy somewhere in Trinidad and Tobago, the Prime Minister two or three hours into her tour of the flooding maybe held about six shovels and two pick axe looking for photograph opportunity as usual, no doubt must have shook about 2,000 dirty muddy hands and I saw an idiot little rasta boy kissing the Prime Minister's palm. That made me sick. And if I had my way, I cut every dreadlock off his head, every one, madame vice President, that idiot boy, what a rude little dreadlock," said Hinds.

Hinds said he felt further sick when he heard a woman saying that she had forgiven the Government for detaining her son during the State of Emergency because she was happy that he found employment in Government's "Colour Me Orange" programme.

He said people don't understand that this was a "vicious prison colour....all over the United States, orange is the colour for jail".

"They made the women in these communities suffer. They took away their men folk and jailed them for two months—no income for two months! They know they brutalise the people, they know they did them harm, so they now come with 'colour me oranges' to rub their back and to mamaguy them," said Hinds.

He expressed his disgust over these issues as he raised a matter on the motion for the adjournment of the Senate: "the necessity on the part of the Government to retain the Police/Army out-posts in the so-called crime "hot spots" at Charford Court, Charlotte Street, Port of Spain; Fort Picton and Lady Young Road, Morvant, in order to more effectively manage crime in these areas."

Hinds stressed the need for joint army and police patrols to continue to be present in these areas.

He said the presence of these police posts in the crime hot spots have deterred criminal activity and brought a measure of comfort to the people in the communities.

Hinds said he understands that these posts have been removed.

"The crimals are there watching on and they say the target get soft again, time to roll again," he said, adding that Government is dismantling the "protective veneer".

National Security Minister Brigadier John Sandy responded to Hinds.

He attempted to knock Hinds on his comments about the rasta but refrained.

"I usually embrace him with his locks and he wants to—well, I wouldn't even bother what he wants to do with that rasta's locks," said Sandy.

He assured that the police posts in the crime hot spots would be maintained.

Sandy said since this Government assumed power, it assured the most efficient use of resources in the fight against crime and that includes the collaborative effort of the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF).

He said the IATF presence has helped in the reduction of serious crime and have also helped to improve community relationships.

Sandy added that it also helped to suppress and dismantle gangs.

"These posts serves as deterrents and have strengthened relations between law enforcment and members of the community," said Sandy.

Homeless man: I was paid to carry racist placard
Published:
Thursday, May 29, 2014

Image
A 41-year-old man, now at the centre of a fiery public debate and possible police investigation, for his involvement in a racist placard demonstration last week, yesterday said he was paid to do so. In an exclusive interview with CNC3 last night, Norbert Cupid, who admitted to being homeless, said he was at Woodford Square, Port-of-Spain, as people assembled for JTUM’s protest march last Friday when he was approached by a man in a red jersey.

He said the man rounded up some other men and told them all that he had a job for them and would pay them $50 if they agreed to do it. He said the man then took them down tothe waterfront, gave them red T-shirts and placards and told them to march in front of Parliament. Cupid said the group complied but while there a United National Congress supporter confronted one of them, hitting him in the face.

He said after they protested outside Parliament, they then joined the JTUM march before dumping the placards in a dumpster near the Customs and Excise Building. The men then went back to Woodford Square and collected their $50. Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley has called on the police to charge the group involved in the protest with sedition. But Cupid said when he heard that and realised the police might be looking for them, he went to the police and was told they could not deal with him immediately.

He made it clear he was not racist but a man who accepted an offer because he was desperate for something to eat. He still had the red T-shirt he was given to march but said he had no political preference.

Reaching for the red card
By Clarence Rambharat
Story Updated: Jun 2, 2014 at 9:01 PM ECT )

The PM’s LifeSport troubles could worsen. It’s in dispute whether Carapo-based criminals control the programme, but corruption in LifeSport is real. For the April 2014 report, the Auditor General examined one month’s payments. For that one month the Auditor General found 59 LifeSport participants paid $88,500 for St Joseph were also paid $88,500 for Maloney. An additional $76,500 was paid to 51 participants for Maloney, resulting in payments to 110 Maloney participants instead of the maximum 60. Six Maraval participants were paid in same bank account.

The PM has placed Minister Anil Roberts’ political future on the line for LifeSport, but when Minister Howai’s full LifeSport audit is completed, the PM should be fighting another governance nightmare.

The connection between LifeSport and Carapo is not accidental. Six Carapo electoral districts with 3,700 registered voters delivered almost 2,000 votes to Minister Roberts in his 2010 D’Abadie/O’Meara win over the PNM’s Karen Nunez-Tesheira by 1,100 votes. Carapo is critical to Roberts and the People’s Partnership. But, if it is found that the Partnership funded criminals and there are deficiencies in the accountability for the money paid out, the Government will lose its argument against alleged PNM “dealings” gangs.

It is very significant that for 2013 the Auditor General could not audit Life-Sport fully. Her analysis of the Ministry of Sport’s Internal Audit Programme of Work for 2013 revealed that high risk areas such as the LifeSport Programme, Development Programme, and Infrastructure Development were just not included for review. Somebody wanted to hide something.

From the limited documentation encountered in reviewing the multi-million dollar Ministry of Sport’s subsidies and transfer programme, the Auditor General recalled her 2013 finding that four equal amounts totalling $1,996,400 were paid in one cheque to a company for the “Taking Sports to Rural Areas Project” for four regions, but this exceeded the Permanent Secretary’s authorised limit of $1 million.

Further, separate tender documents, recommendations, requests for approval and payment vouchers with similar dates and information were seen for each of the amounts. According to the vouchers seen, the payments related to ten grounds in each region—a total of 40 grounds.

However, in response to the query of the Auditor General, only 17 grounds were identified and there was no evidence on the vouchers seen that work was carried out satisfactorily. In any event the payments were made from the “Non-Profit Institutions” account and not the Upgrading of Corporation Grounds account. The Auditor General found weak controls for this “Non-Profit Institutions” account.

In the April 2014 report the Auditor General rediscovered this lucky Ministry of Sport contractor. Five payments totalling $680,455 were made to two companies with a common director for work of the same description undertaken at five recreation grounds. The $1,996,400 payment had been made to one of these companies.

Further, original invoices for two payments totalling $251,859.20 to one company were not produced for audit and three invoices for equal amounts totalling $259,350 for catering of meals for the Lifesport Programme in three different areas did not reflect any business address or telephone contact number for the supplier.

With lots of evidence of poor governance, criminals and state contracts will be a tipping point in the election campaign. LifeSport findings could end of the PM’s pretensions of innocence on criminals and taxpayers’ money for election support. And with a complete loss of innocence, the PM can stop feeding the fable that somehow she can lead a government but not be responsible for its ongoing troubles.

Election strategy?

http://www.guardian.co.tt/news/2014-06- ... gn-exposed

E-mails apparently written by UNC strategy advisers and supporters in the media have been leaked to People’s National Movement (PNM) vice chairman Camille Robinson-Regis, she revealed on Thursday night. At a packed PNM public meeting in the Croisee, San Juan, Robinson-Regis read out the content of the e-mails, as the crowd jeered and catcalled.

One e-mail exchange between radio talk show host and activist Phillip Alexander and UNC deputy leader Dr Roodal Moonilal, copies of which were obtained by the T&T Guardian, appears to show the media personality and possible UNC candidate for Diego Martin West pitching a political television chat show.

The show proposed by Alexander, called Equal Time, would be shown at prime time on the state-owned CNMG television channel C News and would be a platform from which beleaguered or disgraced government ministers could defend themselves.

The second e-mail, sent from an address apparently belonging to Rodney Charles, T&T’s UN ambassador, who will work for the UNC as general election campaign manager in 2015, was sent to an elite list of UNC strategists, supporters and media associates and called for a full-scale sustained attack on PNM leader Dr Keith Rowley designed to provoke him to anger, undermine his personal character and drag down his poll ratings.

Prime-time show for ministers
The Alexander-Moonilal e-mail exchange took place on the morning of May 31 under the subject heading “Make this Happen and everybody wins.” Alexander suggests to an undisclosed recipient list, “Every evening from six to seven on CNMG there could be a one-hour show called ‘Equal Time’ hosted by yours truly.” Modelled on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show, the show, Alexander suggests, will “take the sting out of the news,” using sarcasm and satire.

“The first 15 minutes of the second half-hour would be guest-driven,” Alexander said. “Usually someone in the public eye (government ministers under attack especially) that we ‘humanise’ with humour and personal fun questions until the last bit where we give them the opportunity to debunk opposition misinformation.” Alexander goes on to suggest the show would “undermine opposition messaging in the biased media” and “deliver the lion’s share of the news audience to C News where the content is more balanced...”

Alexander responds: Someone snooping
After the leaked exchange was revealed by Robinson-Regis and posted across PNM social media pages, Alexander took to Facebook, suggesting the PNM was snooping on private correspondence. Asked whether somebody on his distribution list might have leaked the e-mail, he told the T&T Guardian he had forwarded Moonilal’s response to four people, one of whom was his son and another his producer. He did not reveal the names of the other two, but said, “I know for a fact they are of unimpeachable character.”

Roodal Moonilal told the T&T Guardian, “I cannot recall reading such an e-mail but Mr Alexander is a well-known proficient writer and political strategist. “I am very troubled by Rowley’s ability to clandestinely intercept private and confidential correspondence.” Asked whether there may be a leak within the UNC or amongst Alexander’s people, Moonilal replied, “I believe the PNM has some system of intercepting e-mails and text messages.”

Moonilal was then asked whether the content of the suggested TV show would be appropriate for state-funded television. He replied, “In our future discussion we would discuss policy and paying public or private media. We pay all. I have a duty to keep the PNM in opposition and to remind people of the sins of the PNM.”

Campaign against PNM leader
The other e-mail leaked to Robinson-Regis was apparently sent by Rodney Charles. The e-mail reads, “We propose launching a full-scale attack on Keith Rowley come the morning of May 19, 2014, ie, the morning after his expected landslide victory. We absolutely need to bring down his polling ratings. We are therefore asking you (and all our supporters) in whatever way you can, to be part of that attack.”

Charles’ suggestions include referring to him as “Rowley—not Dr Keith Rowley,” associating Rowley’s name with short negative soundbites such as “Rowley is unfit to lead,” and playing up the central themes of the attack campaign by portraying the Opposition Leader as arrogant, dictatorial, temperamental and not a team player.

The e-mail concludes, “Let us…do what we have to do to bring start (sic) putting KR on the defensive. He has shown himself unable to weather sustained attacks. He becomes angry and in effect a raging bull.” Charles proposed three weeks of sustained attacks to take place during the period of the UNC’s anniversary celebrations, as well as the May 23 trade union march in which the PNM and Rowley played a prominent part.

If you think that scandals are more important than real issues and people are going to vote based on scandals, well you continue to believe that.

People are listening to what the are the plans of the those who wish to lead and the scary part is some can only play devil's advocate but make no contribution.

everyone gonna rant and rave about the scandals but when it comes down to it, no one gonna make a vote based on a minister taking 2 pull or beating he hoe. Ppl want infrastructure and stability etc

performance beats old talk

Not talking about the plan of action UML..if that's their strategy fine. Talking about the fact that they themselves admit that they need to drown out their mis-steps. They have more scandals in the public domain than accomplishments that can speak for them.

"The show proposed by Alexander, called Equal Time, would be shown at prime time on the state-owned CNMG television channel C News and would be a platform from which beleaguered or disgraced government ministers could defend themselves. "

the first step to recovery is admitting u have a problem!

and ever PP supporter would agree and admit we made misteps and had embarrassing situations exposed by the insiders within the public service. BUT on each issue it was addressed and rectified.

UNLIKE the pnm which the insiders hide the fact and nothing is corrected and the corruption and wrongdoing is continued.

“It is clear that Dr Rowley continues to avoid enunciating policies, plans or a vision that will benefit the people of Trinidad and Tobago and improve the quality of their lives. Instead of providing alternative policy options that deal with poverty, crime, creating well paying jobs, and reducing our high food import bill, the PNM continues to major in minors.
It is my hope that the PNM will, on their platforms articulate forward looking policies, so that we can enter into a reasoned debate which will allow voters a clear choice,” he said.

I think the country(electorate) is maturing b/c the people who arranged those racist placards are trying to divide the country based on race instead of tackling issues. In that situation only the politicians win, while the people watching each - other 'hard' playing the race game, the politicians can do as they please and get away.

I can honestly say imo the ruse has failed. The country has risen above this stupidness (racism).

Whoever is pushing that agenda needs to work for their money, the old switch and bait/divide and conquer tactic not working. Ppl want results and a higher standard of living.

We the electorate, not the illiterate.

Founder of the Independent Liberal Party, Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner is not seeking re-election as political leader of the one-year-old party. Warner is proposing that one of his deputy political leaders, former Senate vice president Lyndira Oudit be elected as the party’s first female leader. Warner is seeking election as the chairman. He made the disclosures at an address to the party’s Nomination Day exercise at the ILP headquarters on Edward Street, Port-of-Spain, yesterday.

The ILP will elect a new executive to lead the party into next year’s general election. Warner said after reflection and introspection it was time the party made some changes to improve its chances in the 2015 general election. He said if the slate was supported by the party’s membership in the June 29 national executive elections, “it will be another landmark decision on the road to government in 2015.”

The ILP was formed last year after Warner resigned from the People’s Partnership Government. He won the Chaguanas West seat under the ILP banner.

Congress of the People (COP) chairman Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan said she has been overwhelmed by calls from people across the country for her to run for the leadership of the party, but the attacks against her have already started.
Seepersad-Bachan, the Public Administration Minister and San Fernando West MP, met with supporters at the Chaguanas Secondary School on Tuesday, where they urged her to take control of the COP and give it new direction.
Speaking to the Express yesterday, Seepersad-Bachan said she was leaning heavily towards contesting and former COP leader Winston Dookeran’s endorsement weighed heavily on her decision.
She said the people want to reconnect with the COP and many are still confident that the party is a strong alternative political vehicle in the Partnership Government.
However, Seepersad-Bachan said that the mudslinging and dirty politics were unfortunate and called for decorum and responsibility to prevail in all election campaigns.
Yesterday, a Facebook post by a minister’s personal adviser suggested that the party founder should retire due to his age. The post also referred to Seepersad-Bachan as the “wicked witch from the west (SANDO WEST)”. The writer of the post claimed to be UNC but said he supported Ramadhar for COP leader.
Asked about it, Seepersad-Bachan said she was aware of the posting and was disheartened that such gross disrespect could be shown to a former leader.
Sources told the Express that the root of discontentment and attack against Seepersad-Bachan stemmed from her refusal to approve a 50 per cent salary increase to advisers to ministers.
Questioned on this, Seepersad-Bachan said she did not want to divulge any details but stressed that disrespect must not be shown to anyone in this regard.
“This post was very uncalled for. Mr Dookeran has served his time, he was the founder of the COP, he devoted himself to country and development, it is unfortunate that people can say such things about Mr Dookeran,” said Seepersad-Bachan.
Seepersad-Bachan said the primary feedback she has been getting from the ground is the need for the COP to have a new direction and to return to its base of supporters.
“The feedback has been good, leadership in my view is about teamwork, leadership is growing new leaders and not having a maximum leader,” she said.
She said there was always concern about the COP leaving the Partnership but noted that it was the COP that started the whole process of bringing together the various groups in 2007.
“We may not have gotten the formula right, but we need to work on that,” said Seepersad-Bachan.
The COP, she said, will continue to maintain its position—in taking a position on national matters and dealing with the consequences.
With respect to the decision of the COP to suspend Sport Minister Anil Roberts from the party, Seepersad-Bachan said she supported this move because as a mother she was answerable to persons in society.
“I am a mother, I have a 13-year-old son. There are parents, teachers and others who are demanding answers,” said Seepersad-Bachan. —AR

interestingly with all the cameras in POS not a pic has surfaced with the man holding said placards during the march through POS even though he claimed to have done so. So this "homeless" man just decided to risk life and limb to go to this spot and hold such placards to achieve what?
also does the PP supporters subscribe to gang ideology ? Since when is an unprinted T-shirt of a particular colour a confirmation of political allegiance? Is this how the PP and their religious guru endorsed by the PM able to identify "PNM public servants"?
