WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama said on Thursday he had authorized "targeted" U.S. airstrikes against Islamic State fighters in northern Iraq and military airdrops of humanitarian supplies to besieged religious minorities there to prevent a "potential act of genocide."

Speaking after meetings with his national security team, Obama - in his most significant response to the Iraq crisis – said he approved limited use of American air power to protect American personnel if Islamic State militants advance toward the Kurdish capital Arbil where they are based.

The airstrikes would be the first carried out by the U.S. military in Iraq since the withdrawal of its forces at the end of 2011, but Obama insisted he would not commit any ground forces and had no intention of letting the United States get dragged back into a war there.

Obama took action amid international fears of a humanitarian catastrophe engulfing tens of thousands of members of Iraq’s minority Yazidi sect driven out of their homes and stranded on Sinjar mountain under threat from rampaging militants of Islamic State, an al Qaeda splinter group. Many Iraqi Christians have also fled for their lives.

"We can act carefully and responsibly to prevent a potential act of genocide," Obama told reporters at the White House. "I've therefore authorized targeted airstrikes if necessary." REUTERS

ISIS controls oil fields, all US military equipment and they have a huge army.

But good news nonetheless. Russia sent the Iraq government some Jets recently but this was not enough and now that thousands of people dead and 40,000 almost died of dehydration the Iraq government has "asked" for this air strike.

Big difference now from when Bush invaded Iraq. Glad to see the Iraq government seeking friendly relationship and help from America. Hopefully those people have not died of dehydration by now, however this problem isn't going to be fixed with a few air strikes.

This problem will now be more difficult than when the soviets were trying to win the war in Afghanistan that never went anywhere.

This is the Islamic World's problem. Saudi Arabia and the rest of the Sunni Gulf states allowed ISIS to flourish with their money in the initial stages, all to topple Shia factions. Iran as the primary Shia power will never allow ISIS to consolidate power right next door to them. They will support the Iraqi Govnt directly (as they are doing now by having their pilots fly the Iraqi jets) and also indirectly by unleashing their proxies such as Hezbollah on ISIS.

As it stands right now the US and Iran are basically on the same "team" for the time being. Irony or sweet irony.

The terror group President Barack Obama threatened to strike in Iraq Thursday evening is itself threatening to strike the American homeland.

“I say to America that the Islamic Caliphate has been established,” Abu Mosa, a spokesman for the terror group known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), told VICE Media in a video interview posted online Thursday. “Don’t be cowards and attack us with drones. Instead send your soldiers, the ones we humiliated in Iraq.”

“We will humiliate them everywhere, God willing, and we will raise the flag of Allah in the White House,” he added.

The video is the first of a multipart series on ISIS VICE Media says it plans to release. VICE Media reporter Medyan Dairieh recently spent three weeks in the ISIS-controlled Syrian city of Raqqa, which the terror group has proclaimed the capital of its newly declared Islamic caliphate.

ISIS’s threat to conquer the United States came before President Obama’s Thursday announcement that he may authorize airstrikes against the terror group in order to protect American personnel in Iraq.

“Today I authorized two operations in Iraq,” the president said in a speech from the White House. “Targeted airstrikes to protect our American personnel, and a humanitarian effort to save thousands of Iraqi civilians who are trapped on a mountain without food and water, and are facing almost certain death.”

“To stop the advance on Erbil, I’ve directed our military to take targeted strikes against ISIL terrorist convoys should they move toward the city,” Obama elaborated, using the acronym for another name the terror group is known by, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. “We intend to stay vigilant, and take action if these terrorist forces threaten our personnel or facilities anywhere in Iraq, including our consulate in Erbil and our embassy in Baghdad.”

ISIS — which recently began referring to itself simply as the Islamic State — now controls a large swath of territory extending from Syria into Iraq, where it has implemented a harsh form of Islamic law and appears to be committing a genocide against religious minorities who refuse to convert to Islam.

As pointed out on Checkpoint this morning, the pilots have the ability to set up laser guidance on their own, or with the help of another fighter pilot nearby.

A variety of other U.S. warships are in the Persian Gulf. They include the USS Philippine Sea, a cruiser, and the USS Roosevelt, a destroyer, both of which are operating with the USS George H.W. Bush as part of the Bush carrier strike group, a Navy official said.

The USS O’Kane, a destroyer, also is operating independently in the Persian Gulf, the official said. Another destroyer, the USS Arleigh Burke, is in the region, but was in port Friday in Bahrain.
