Used diesel PRADO or PAJERO which is better?

Postby redman24 » October 12th, 2014, 9:32 pm

Ok. Tuners now venturing into the diesel world andci'm looking for somecadvice as to which is a better buy between the PRADO and the PAJERO in terms of parts availabilty, performance and reliability.
I'm trying to decide between the two in the PBG-PBP 1998 to 2004 local models and would like some feedback.
Also any recomended mechanics parts outlets etc. Thanks

Prado in my opinion, works very well, good resale value, don't think you may need parts for it if it is well maintained.

Having driven both these vehicles on an occasional basis for many years, I prefer the Pajero for the driving experience, but I would still buy the Prado for myself for comfort and reliability, especially for the older vehicle. The Pajero that I drove was gas though.

This is the model pajero i'm looking at.

Is this the bubble fender and do all of these come withvthe 4m40 engine . I personally find that this model pajero's interior and it's aggresive exterior looks especially with rims is better than the prado and that the suspension is also strong.
but engine and transmission durability and parts are my major concerns

i had to make same decision 2 years ago, according to the years you mention pajero had an updated bigger model while prado was still a first gen, i drove both and considered expense for service and repair and parts. i bought a 2007 pajero very very happy it, no complains and still had change to buy 20" rims and tires new :)

Which did you consider expensive for service, repair and parts?

This is the 3rd generation pajero most comes with the 4m41 engine. I have experience driving the 2nd and 3rd generation pajero as well as the 2nd generation prado (96-02). I will recommend the 2nd generation prado over the 2nd generation pajero although the pajero was more fun to drive and the ones with shocks under the seat is very comfortable. However, the 3rd generation pajero is a different beast especially with that 4m41 engine. So I'll recommend the 3rd gen bubble bumper pajero

ole model prado - '99- '2000.

saw a woman drive into a wooden lamppost without hitting the brakes (she was texting) at approx. 50kph, break the lamp post at the base, and all that happen was the front went in a little bit.

Having owned both, the pajero (V77) and the prado (J95 i think), in terms of parts( except engine parts) the pajero 's parts are readily available out of the US and is very inexpensive compared to the prado whose parts cost around 2-3 times more. Diesel engine parts are another story though, while I've never had any problems with mines, when I researched the both engines, parts were available from either the company(very expensive), or from Australia or the UK with again the pajero being the cheaper of the two.
As for performance the Pajero beat the Prado hands down in terms of power, torque, speed and fuel comsumption, the pajero also handles way better than the prado thanks to a monocoque body design (it drives more like a car) as opposed to the prado's body on chasis design which feels sloppy.
As for interior space the Prado's third row seats takes up alot of space in the rear resulting in a reduced carrying capacity, you can remove them and you'll end up with the same amount of space as the Pajero which achieves this by fold-away third row seats.
In my opinion if you want a very versatile durable daily driver then go with the Pajero, and if resale value and bragging rights is your MAIN concern then the prado might be better suited for you.
Hope that helps

Thanks bro, anywhere for parts locally without having to hit the company and also a good mechanic that knows his way around a pajero or a mitsu diesel in general?

Oh, the "leather" interior also cracks up after a while, better to get fabric.
