Less than 11 hours after more than $500,000 worth of high-grade marijuana plants were seized at his apartment near The University of the West Indies (UWI) in St Augustine, police arrested the 21-year-old suspect wanted in connection with the find.
At about 6 p.m. on Thursday, a party of officers, including Inspector Siagan Siewdass, Sgt Vetus Hernandez, PC Chadee and PC John, among several others, made their way to Old Tim Road, St Augustine.
The officers searched the home where they found their suspect.
At the time, the man had a black bag in his possession with 80 grammes of marijuana.
He was detained and taken to St Joseph Police Station, where he was being questioned up to press time.
He is expected to be brought before a Tunapuna magistrate on Monday.
At about 7 a.m. on Thursday, the same party of officers found a “greenhouse” of marijuana trees at a three-bedroom apartment along Bedessie Street, St Augustine.
In two of the rooms, the officers found lighting and hydroponics equipment and air filtration systems, as well as more than 100 fully-grown marijuana trees and several seedlings.
The illegal items were all seized and transferred to St Joseph Police Station and the officers questioned the landlord about the tenant.
The suspect, police said, was a former student of the university, who had dropped out last year.
He was said to have been majoring in Business Management and Information Technology.
