Local WoodPecker

The Crimson-Crested Woodpecker (Campephilus Melanoleucos) is a very large woodpecker which is a resident breeding bird Trinidad and Tobago

In Trinidad this bird is said to be uncommon and is often confused with the Lineated Woodpecker which has the exact same colors but different markings, this bird is also absent from Tobago.

Woodpeckers have short incubation period, but at contrary, nesting period is longer than in other birds’ species.

Chicks are brooded and fed by both parents, and remain at nest for 3 to 4 weeks after hatching. Young remain within the family group until next breeding season.

Crimson-Crested Woodpeckers chip out holes, often quite large, while searching out insects in trees.

They mainly eat wood-boring insects and larvae, as well as ants, termites, small vertebrates and caterpillars.

Several of these large woodpeckers may be seen (4 or more) attracted to the same dead tree while feeding

This woodpecker is less often seen in Trinidad

Local Fish ~ Lenten

Fish prices are normally high during the Lenten season, but several factors including rough seas and scarcity have sent the cost of the meat alternative skyrocketing this year.

Two weeks ago, vice president of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Fisherfolk (TTUF) Kishore Boodram said the price of fish was:

Carite — $25 per pound

Salmon — $20

Red fish- $20

Mullet - Small Fish — $10 and under per pound.

Ending this Week The prices of King Fish and Carite have since risen to $30 per pound but other prices have remained the same

Local Bird ~ Wattled Jacana or Lily Trotter

The lily-trotter is a very common resident of freshwater wetlands in Trinidad, found in a range of waterlogged or damp areas. While common in Trinidad, these birds are actually rare in Tobago (partially due to the scarcity of wetlands on the island). They are beautiful birds with chestnut wings and a black underside, neck and head. One striking feature is the red wattle at the base of the bill on both males and females which gives the bird its name.

The name lily-trotter, on the other hand is related to the bird’s toes. Lily-trotters have very long toes and this gives them a unique ability. Longer toes allow them to better spread their weight over the surface on which they are walking, and this means that they can walk over floating objects such as lily leaves and pond weed, which ordinarily would not be able to support a bird of that size. This allows them to access a niche in the wetland environment that other birds cannot, and is an example of a species adapting to suit its environment. The ability to roam the otherwise inaccessible areas of the water’s surface also allows them to build their nests out in “open” water – a useful trick as land predators such as mongoose and rats cannot reach them here. Jacanas construct a crude floating nest of plant matter, often anchored to a floating plant such as a water hyacinth.

When it comes to reproduction, wattled jacanas have another trick up their sleeves. In many birds, females typically lay and tend to the eggs while her partner, depending on the species, either faithfully stays with her or moves on to mate with another female. The wattled jacana has reversed this traditional role. Male jacanas construct the nest and will do all of the egg incubation while female jacanas, free of nest duty, may mate and lay their eggs in several different nests belonging to different males (once the males are not already incubating eggs or tending young chicks)!

Once hatched, baby jacanas will be cared for by the male parent, eventually following him about and foraging for a range of small invertebrates and plant seeds that comprise the jacana’s diet. If threatened, the babies will actually dive into the water and remain submerged until the threat passes. Before they attain adult plumage, immature jacanas look rather different to their parents, sporting brown wings, white undersides and neck and a pink wattle.

Once mature, the birds will move to their own territories, as adults are fiercely territorial and birds can often be seen chasing one another. They can be exceedingly noisy birds. The call of a jacana is a loud “tek-tek-tek” and in some parts of Trinidad the bird is known as the “tek-teky” as a result of this. Jacanas have a bright yellow patch of feathers on their wing that is visible in flight. They will use this patch in display or as a warning to other birds, often holding their wings aloft to display the patches. This display also reveals a sharp spur on the bird’s forewing (and gives the bird yet another of its names – the spurwing). The birds use these spurs against each other when they engage in territorial disputes.

The lily-trotter is just one of many interesting bird species that can be found in our country. Indeed, the sight and sound of wattled jacanas are hallmark features of Trinidadian wetlands. We should seek to eliminate the threats to these birds such as the back-filling and pollution of wetlands so that lily-trotters and all our other wetland species remain with us for a long time to come

Local DragonFly ~ Batimamselle

Dragonflies are an ancient group dating back to the Carboniferous Geologic period.

Many dragonflies have Brilliant Iridescent or Metallic Colours, making them conspicuous in flight.

There are around 6,500 species and they are found on every continent except Antarctica.

Each locale has developed a unique meaning to it, its behaviour and lifestyle.

Most cultures believe the dragonfly is a symbol of maturity, power and poise, self-realization, and living in the moment.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the word "batimamselle" is a descriptive synonym for dragonfly.

The English word "Batty", meaning crazy, odd, eccentric, and the patois word for woman, combined to describe the erratic flying patterns of this common insect

Local Horses ~ Helping Humans

David is 2 years old and has been diagnosed as autistic.

David was initially very shy around the horses, and due to his tactile defensiveness and sensory issues, he at first did not want to touch or feed the horses.

Eventually his inner curiosity and attraction for the horses overcame his fears, and he began to initiate both communication and contact with them.

In just a few sessions, David has begun to show improvement in all areas, even imitating the horse sounds and attempting to speak

He is also a huge poser and loves the camera

Local Matura Beach ~ Cleanup 2015

Over 1400 Volunteers turned out for the Annual Beach Cleanup in Preparation for the Turtle Nesting Season

During the rainy season large quantities of debris and drift wood flow down the rivers and gather along the shoreline.

Recognizing that the nesting process is hampered by debris on the beach, sometimes resulting in the turtles returning to sea without depositing their eggs

This project involves the collection and removal of glass, plastic, metal and degradable materials from the 8 km shoreline, to facilitate successful nesting

Note: Persons will be Required to Obtain a Permit via Forestry Division in Order to Gain Access to Fishing Pond, Matura and Grande Riviere Beach.

Local Painting ~ Rain Stop Play

This Watercolour called, “Rain Stop Play” by Jackie Hinkson is part of the Angostura Collection of around 100 works of Art on the walls of its Corporate Offices.

Selected sketches that express the mood that regional cricket seems to have found itself in.

There is a sense of waiting and watching, hoping that something different will happen, but hardly expecting that it will.

So the figures in the sketches do not exude the tension of anticipation, rather they look mainly like patient die-hards, hardly knowing what else to do with themselves.

The Watercolour above that shows the covers going on to Stop Play, seems Symbolic of the Endless Rainy Season of West Indies cricket

The painting was done by Alfredo Antonio Codallo - 1913-1970
Artist, Journalist, Storyteller and Photographe
r

Alfred Codallo became famous both nationally and internationally for his paintings on folklore characters.

Carl Jacobs writes of his paintings of Papa Bois, Soucouyant, Douenes, and Lagahous, "what makes these pictures great is not the painter's skill alone.

Each is a triumph of creative imagination. …Codallo is the first to give them a visual existence." Twelve of his paintings are now in the National Museum.

Codallo was also well known throughout his homeland for his storytelling.

His series of stories written in the Trinidad Guardian, is testimony of his ability to bring characters to life.

One of his most popular characters was "Poly Carr", a wheelwright who told tall tales effortlessly

http://www.peppermango-people.com/folkl ... klore.html

"At one time in his career he became the Artistic Director of a leading advertising firm, and later on he "free-lanced" for various firms.

Over many years Codallo received several important commissions such as a series of pen and ink drawings of the Folklore Characters and scenes of Old Time Trinidad as well as drawings of a few popular Folk Dances and village life.

These are all reproduced in this book with appropriate texts designed to further develop an appreciation for the contribution of this outstanding artist of Trinidad and Tobago"
