Point of sale software recommendations?

Postby starscream00 » May 9th, 2015, 8:58 pm

I'm looking for a good point of sale software for a retail business. I'll be needing to run 2 terminals.

I am currently looking at cloud based pos, but my fear is that it might not be able to function if internet goes down.

From what I've learned, if i have a traditional setup, ill need a sever to store my database so my inventory could be changed across the 2 terminals. ( i don't have much experience with database or servers).

I'll be sourcing my hardware online.

Any suggestions on the software? And any feed back from persons who are using cloud based pos.

Thanks

Running your business off the cloud is fine..its actually the future of on site servers etc.
If your concern is internet going down then i suggest you have a redundant ISP..u can meesage me and we can talk more.

I tested a few cloud systems when I was looking to upgrade. They work pretty well, but none had VAT interrogation, most are builded for the US with sales tax in mind.

Another thing I noticed only CashierLive had those that can handle supermarkets and minimarts allowing multiple variations of the item (Single, 6pk and 24pk). Current cloud systems are mostly targeting small retails like small clothing botiques

Massy Technologies has a new system called CAP it is worth looking at.

If you don't mind what is your budget for this POS?

I'll check out CAP.

I was checking out Cashier live, but in the review the guy said it lacks the future which a lot of other cloud based pos have, which is being able to operate without internet. The others had a small amount of memory in which you can still manage transactions and so.

On the whole, cloud based pos looks really appealing, but some (if not all) doesn't have deep employee integration. (as you say more targeting smaller retail businesses)

I have used cash register express in my old workplace, and i like the interface, everything is usually done really quick.
But we only had one terminal there, so im not sure how to set up a 2 terminal pos and have them link to each other to. (server?) i have little knowledge of server and database.

My budget is around $1000 US

At 1000USD you cannot you cloud based, as they charge per month and will exceed your budget by a 1 1/2 years. Another issue I came across is that if internet is not present the system will not start (NCR Silver is an example) but I think a fix is on the way.

Most POS systems will exceed your budget. A simple quickbooks POS is about 3000USD IIRC

Cloud based would have exceeded my initial software budget in the long run, but with business up and running, i think it would have covered the monthly costs as i go along.

Sorry i should have made myself clear on that.
$1000 US budget for the software only, per terminal. (Wont be needing a complete pos system since i'm sourcing the parts to build my own)
I know ill have to buy the license for the other terminal, which would be whatever the price for the one i choose.

correct me if i'm wrong be needing 3 license? 2 for both terminals and 1 for the computer acting as the server?

Depends on the software, some charge per terminal so it will be 3 (Server, 2 POS terminals). Other charge on what draws data from the server and license based on that, example Barcode computers to receive goods will require a license thus carrying to 4, networked scale would need a license also carrying it to 5.

It all depends on the software you choose.
