Security beefed up at new fire station
Published on Sep 3, 2015, 10:16 pm AST
By Anna Ramdass
Security has been beefed up at the spanking new multi-million-dollar Mayaro Fire Station following suspected deliberate acts of vandalism, says Jearlean John, chairman of the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT).
A short video being circulated on Facebook shows the fallen “R” from the Mayaro Fire Station sign on the ground and a male voice commenting with an expletive criticising the Government.
According to the video, the “A” in Mayaro appeared to remain intact with the use of scotch tape.
John told the Express yesterday this was sabotage.
“The letter ‘R' was deliberately unscrewed and thrown on the ground,” she stated.
“Three screws were taken out and the ‘R' thrown on the ground. That was reported to the police and security at the Fire Service was beefed up,” John added.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar opened the station which was estimated to cost some $70 to $80 million last week.
Chief Fire Officer Kenny Gopaul said the station was 95 per cent completed and he was waiting on equipment to outfit the station.
UDeCOTT has constructed and delivered the Mayaro Fire Station and construction has just started on a new fire station in Penal.
Designs have already been completed for two new fire stations in Lady Hailes, San Fernando, and in Arouca, with plans for fire stations as well in Chaguaramas and Woodbrook.
John noted UDeCOTT has also constructed a number of new police stations throughout the country, with eight being completed and delivered in Cumuto, Oropouche, La Brea, Brasso, Moruga, Maloney, Piarco and Arima.
New stations are currently under construction in Besson Street, St Joseph and St Clair, and there are plans for new stations in Old Grange, Tobago, Roxborough, Matelot, Manzanilla and Matura.
Moonilal: PNM desperate
Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal said the Mayaro Fire Station was a state-of-the-art facility that proves the Kamla Persad-Bissessar-led Government continues to deliver to the people.
He said the people of Mayaro have longed for a new fire station and finally it was given to them, as he assured all their needs would be met under a government that is people-centred.
Moonilal pointed out that UDeCOTT has delivered countless projects and it was passing strange and suspicious that on the eve of an election, letters were falling out of place.
“The PNM is getting desperate and they are seeing the writing on the wall. They will vandalise the wall as well,” said Moonilal.
Moonilal said Persad-Bissessar is ahead of Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley in the election race and warned there may be acts to sully projects delivered by the Government.
He also said the Government was “heartened” by the Express-commissioned Nigel Henry poll, as he noted the poll showed more people found favour in the People's Partnership in managing the country's economy.

Trinidad & Tobago economy contracts by -1.2%
Published on Sep 4, 2015, 10:24 am AST
By \\\\\ Aleem Khan
The economy of Trinidad and Tobago contracted by -1.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2015.
This just released figure by the Central Bank in its Economic Bulletin (EB) dated July 2015 is directly and unambiguously contradicting what Finance Minister Larry Howai has been telling the country.
Speaking at a United National Congress (UNC) cottage meeting at Green Acres, San Fernando on Wednesday night, Howai said “despite falling energy prices, Trinidad and Tobago’s economy has continued to record positive growth,” according to a release from the UNC campaign office Kamla 2015 yesterday.
However, Trinidad & Tobago economic activity slowed in the first quarter of 2015 year-on-year (y-o-y) to -1.2 per cent, the Central Bank of Trinidad & Tobago (CBTT) said in the EB. Trinidad and Tobago’s energy sector contracted -3.3 per cent y-o-y in Q1 2015 while non-energy shrunk -0.7 per cent over the same period, CBTT said.
The country’s overall deficit also doubled y-o-y from -0.9 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) from October 2013 to May 2014 to -1.8 per cent of GDP October 2014 to May 2015, the CBTT said.
Howai: Exceptional performance
Meanwhile, Howai in the release said: “In the nine months income was down by $3 billion and we actually were able to bring in exceptional income by selling assets that we had for CLICO. They have to start paying us back and that reduced the negative income. We reduced the expenses by $6 billion so overall while we expected a deficit of $4 billion we only showed a deficit of $1 billion. The first nine months was exceptional for us in terms of performance of our economy.”
9,100 women stopped working
Unemployment increased to 3.7 per cent in Q1 2015 vs 3.1 per cent in Q1 2014, as 20,400 persons are no longer employed, the CBTT said. The increase in the unemployment rate was mainly on account of a decline in the number of individuals with jobs (20,400 persons) when compared to the corresponding period in 2014. However, the number of persons without jobs only increased by 3,300 persons reflecting a withdrawal of individuals from the labour force, the CBTT said.
As a result, the participation rate declined to 60.9 per cent from 62.6 per cent in Q1 y-o-y. An analysis of employment by industry revealed job losses were broad-based across sectors. While there were employment gains emerging in the Wholesale and Retail Trade, Restaurants and Hotels (6,600 persons) and Agriculture (3,000 persons) sectors, sizeable job losses were observed in the Community, Social and Personal Services (16,700 persons), Construction (5,900 persons) and Transport, Storage and Communication (4,200 persons) sectors, among others.
CBTT said: “An analysis of labour transfers revealed notable shifts in employment among the sectors but moreso a significant withdrawal of persons from the labour force since 2014. The majority of persons leaving the labour force were females (9,100 persons) who were previously employed under temporary arrangements.”
Foreign reserves fall
Foreign reserves also fell from 12.7 months of import cover to 12.2 months, from US$11.3 billion to US$10.59 billion as at June 2015 , said CBTT.
The Central Bank said the current account surplus of 8.3 per cent of GDP in 2014 is estimated to shrink to 5.2 per cent of GDP this year.
Public debt to rise
Taxpayers also have more US dollar denominated debt to inherit. CBTT
said: “External debt increased slightly to $12.9 billion as a result of US$30 million in disbursements from the Caribbean Development Bank for the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Project Initiative. External debt is expected to accelerate on account of new loans contracted during the quarter but not yet disbursed. This includes borrowings of US$215 million from the ING Bank N.V. in Amsterdam, Netherlands and US$171.9 million from the Export Import Bank of China. These monies are to be used to finance the purchase of naval assets, as well as for the construction of the Arima Hospital.”

Tobago Technology Centre opened
JIn attempt to increase the number of skilled labour in Tobago, Government has opened the Tobago Technology Center.
At the opening, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training Fazal Karim noted that while it was a commendable tradition to learn "on-the-job" training from the village tradesmen and women, the time had come to take the "next step in technology and skills training as necessitated by our thrust for further growth and development".
"Today’s event therefore represents a very historic day in the lives of the people of Tobago. The Metal Industries Company (MIC) and the Youth Training and Employment Partnership Programme (YTEPP) formally open the Tobago Technology Centre – the largest facility of its kind for training and development – in the areas of computing, entrepreneurship, and a myriad of vocational skills – for Tobagonians. This centre will accommodate approximately 500 trainees, and provide opportunities for career and academic advancement.”
He said by opening the Centre, Government has showed its intent to provide training, both at the pre-craft and higher craft levels to an under-served population.
"As a result, the immediate gains of this initiative are obvious. However, the long-term socio- economic impact - in terms of employment levels, education, entrepreneurship and skills mobility must be recognised and appreciated. We are therefore placing the future of Tobago in the hands of those who will benefit most from its development – Tobagonians," Karim said.
To further complement the training delivered at the Tobago Technology Centre, Karim assured that his Ministry would continue to "breathe new life into tertiary education and training on the island of Tobago through".
These initiatives include the commencement of construction on a new Integrated Learning Campus, which will house three major institutions namely UWI, UTT and COSTAATT.
Tobagonians were also assured that they would be granted the highest standard of tertiary level education, as the institutions had all gone through the quality assurance process and granted institutional accreditation – meeting international standards for recognition of tertiary institutions.
Karim also highlighted the up-coming launch of the CDG Initiative – Closing the Digital Gap, where Government will expand training opportunities in ICT as a means of ensuring more equitable access to technology training and facilities for all. This will be facilitated through access to YTEPPs computer buses.
