Finance Minister says "Buy smaller cars"

Postby Duane 3NE 2NR » April 25th, 2016, 9:49 pm

CNC3 - The Finance Minister wants citizens to purchase smaller cars.
As he amended the motor vehicles act to include the new 50% luxury tax. He explained the measure is aimed at spreading the economic burden. But the Opposition had questions about its purpose.

Add this to "eat cassava" "grow up" "calm down" to the list of condescending statements, and accompanying hypocritical actions by the Government.

What smaller engines is he talking about? Most vehicles on the road are already 1.5L ,1.6L and 1.8L. This is not like the US where most cars will have engines of 2.0 and up. This is purely anecdotal.

But still.. what are the big gas guzzling vehicles in Trinidad? And is the number of those vehicles making a significant impact on the overall consumption of the country's fuel?

Govt collects more taxes as more (unsubsidized) fuel is sold anyway.

He is saying for richer ppl to buy smaller cars, but somehow men with Almeras and Corollas getting offended. Trinis seem not to know that every country in the world with at least a 90% literacy rate incentivizes the purchase of smaller cars.

the fuel efficiencies he quoted foe small cars as average:

Imbert said cars with big engines consumed more fuel. He said the average fuel consumption for a private car with an engine size of 1501-1600 cc was six litres per 100 km; for a car of 1800 cc- 7 litres per 100 km; and for a car of 2600 cc- 8.7 litres per 100 km.

those numbers seem very unrealistic as average to me.

lol @ drive smaller vehicles....lets face reality here....those of the well off status can afford the price increase in gas and can pay it. they not goin to buy a corolla / march / swift / lancer as those cars have smaller engines than lets say porsche and prado lexus ...audi etc.

lol @ drive vehicles with alternative fuels...WHAT ALTERNATIVE FUELS....?? cng is a joke...with only about 9 filling stations nationwide and half of those 9 seem to always be not working. they f used / new car dealers dont bring vehicles that use other types of fuel simply as we dont have any infrastructure for it nor the cost for parts from a maintenance perspective.

why doesnt imbert lead by example and instead buy a smaller more fuel efficient car but the only example he seems to be giving is - i not affected...i buyin my macan..payin for it with YOUR tax $$$$ and fullin gas too...# notaffected meanwhile..allyuh ban yuh belly plant cassava etc etc...

where zoom racist....

Nah I just refuse to beat up when truth is there are so few cars over 2.0 that people buy regularly, and that this is an increase in the existing tax for a particular bracket of cars. Even if tomorrow i decided to buy a 3.28i or a c class I'd fall below the bracket. If I could afford a 3.35 I wouldn't gripe about the tax, I'd just pay it or downsize to smaller engine. It's an increase in tax on a particular bracket of cars , we all have choices.

This gov't is clearly bullying the citizens, classing of rich ,middle class and poor. Dictating people ," i'm just making an example" last time didn't the US overthrow the Saddam wicked regime, if we had attitude like Haiti or Jamaica we would have an unrest to get this Gov't out .All this talk about Hiring foreign companies to see how we spend and fix the problem ,did the PNM mention the cost too tax payers sure it's in the millions. All what the PNM say stop doing ,they doing in our faces boldly, it's easy to set an example.in my opion the USA is alredy giving orders to the PNM head of state let Sweet Trinidad & Tobago become a US territory we alredy copy them ,ever been to some usa caribbean states we could learn the cost of living , let our dollar become the USD .

i'm so happy i made the choice to migrate .
