Is our Commissioner of Police going to make a statement on this? What is his definition of serious crime?

Jamilia Derevenax was working her restaurant job at the popular MovieTowne complex in Trinidad’s capital when she got a phone call from a man she knew. Shortly after leaving to meet him, she was found with her throat slit in the parking lot, the victim of what police are calling a “domestic dispute.”

The 27-year-old’s death earlier this month is one in a string of high profile killings of women on the tiny dual-island Caribbean nation of 1.3 million people. The murders have raised such alarm that Trinidad and Tobago’s prime minister felt compelled to weigh in on a national conversation about male domination and a culture of violence.

“You called on the Prime Minister to do something about crime. I am not in your bedroom, I am not in your choice of men,” Keith Rowley said, expressing concern that about one third of the 52 murders police have recorded so far this year were related to domestic violence. Other groups say the numbers are even higher.

Women’s groups swiftly accused Rowley of victim-blaming, prompting a backlash in local and social media. Rowley defended himself, saying his comments were taken out of context.

But the prime minister’s statement mirrors the ongoing debate in society over who should take responsibility for issues surrounding domestic violence and attitudes toward women. Both advocacy groups and government institutions have called for better socialisation of young men and boys.

The Stream examines the social and cultural issues driving domestic violence in Trinidad and Tobago, and what steps are needed to address the problem.

But getting back to the point, the real issue is that of violence in general because violence isn't isolated to one gender even though we like to believe such.
Our entire society is extremely aggressive. No matter what nation you're in there's going to be violence.
Perhaps there are things can be done to actually effect change rather than passing meaningless legislation, but most likely nothing will ever be done, because in Trinidad after about a week all of our memories reset.
Nobody really cares about thier fellow man. The only time people care is when issues affect them or when they can use the issue to score political points(PNM&unc). Let's be real here you think for a second kamla or Rowley give A damn about anything except thier pockets???
But i must applaud them though, they were able to divide and conquer an entire country thus making them powerless to fight back...

At times I don' think that it is "all of a sudden" it was coming for a while now....maybe there was a spike at one point but because of failure to properly manage the society it just kept getting out of hand, add to that the fact that the modern media and technologies that allowed for the unfiltered ability to share were devloped and poplarised, it made everyone know what was going on to a great degree.

This over exposure gradually resulted in desensitization by the massess, sad but true.

I do remember going to school in the 2000's almost every day in the headlines was somehing about the spiralling crime problem, not to mention the kidnapping, that was the reality for the youth of Trinidad growing up in that time, just murders and kidnappings. If anything when the kidnapings stopped that was good only to replaced by an over compensation in the gang murder rates. UGH

It's not sudden. People realize that there is no law. So they just doing what they want. You now have robberies where men giving back the victim travelling money. They doing the robbery simply because nothing will happen. It's not that they just bad people. Then they will progress into the next worse crime because there is nothing to stop them.

Humans will regress to lawlessness if rules of the tribe/society are not upheld to keep civilization in check. Trinidad has always had this attitude, but it's just got worse in the last decade because the people know how incompetent the police and courts are. It's now become a matter of do what you feel like.

And politicians do know how to fix this problem. Don't think that they're clueless. They have many educated and influential people advising them how to fix it. But they don't really care that much to fix it because... politics. It's just way too much effort and hard work from the bottom up to fix this by every member of government, so they just leave it. One or two may try, but that's impossible because hands are always tied at some level. It has to be everyone, the police service, the legislature, the schools, and all of us.

And what is this rape culture? We all agree rape is bad. It is against the law. We send people to jail for it. There is no war against women. Women are not the only victims here. The whole society is devolving and we are all in this thing. Don't make it about men vs women.

Look at the country where these things originate and how they operate. They divide people on the bases of race, gender, social class and education. They do these things for a reason. Always remember a house divided will fall...

Plus don't put it behind these women groups having an ulterior motive. Just look at the groups that claim to want to help the poor, the sick, animals and the environment. look at the money they ask for, and then look at what they do with the resources they are given. If you look deep enough you'll begin to see certain patterns.
If you're looking for an example, look at Mother Teresa. Look at what she preached and then look at her actions, and then you'll realise the fraud she truly was. Sometimes we need to separate the myth from facts.
