When the FU Vigo aka the Raj van started appearing, they were mostly bought by well off contractors etc cuz of the 300k plus price tag. Some considered this to be a luxury vehicle, so the fad spread.
In typical trini fashion where everyone wanna keep up with the 'haves', the plebs and 'have nots' tried to follow suit. Unable to afford a luxury sedan or raj van....they began purchasing other pickups like the Ranger, Isuzu etc, which were affordably priced. The car dealers took notice of the trend and brought in shipments of pickup trucks, both 4x4 and cheaper 4x2. The roads became flooded with these stupid drivers and their vans, cuz financial institutions began giving car loans for a 7 year period. I refer to them as 'stupid drivers' because the majority cannot manoeuvre said vehicles in a safe manner, much less park them properly in a parking space. They are ignorant to the fact that an unloaded tray causes the vehicle to behave differently when loaded. Their ignorance of physics as well, has many driving them like cars on the road. It's surprising though that this fad still exists.
The new fad, which supposedly is an indication of wealth/status etc, is the influx of FU BMWs and Benz in the 200k price range. Seeing that most compact cars are in the 160-220k price range....some have chosen to spend (borrow) a little extra, to purchase these rides.
