The American Chamber of Trinidad and Tobago is supporting the suggestion for an increase in the price of electricity.

The discussion started on Wednesday by the President of the Energy Chamber Dr. Thackwray Driver who said the time has come for us to reconsider the state's heavy subsidies on electricity.

On Thursday morning, President of AMCHAM Mitchell De Silva said government should remove the subsidy on electricity as well as water and fuel.

The conversation on the need for diversification continues and now Member of the Tobago Chamber David Wong has joined the discussion.

Noting that Tobagonians are already struggling to make ends meet, due to the current economic situation, he wants the Minister of Finance to place emphasis on tourism when he reads the 2017-2018 budget.

Three of this country's major business groups are giving the government credit after it hosted a live consultation on Wednesday detailing the country's financial position

And as the government continues to struggle to meet its commitments given its financial restrictions comes word from the central bank that it's now faced with an increased wage bill.

With days to go before the budget presentation, one trade union body is warning the government against touching the fuel subsidy.

And Natuc explains why it was absent from yesterday's consultations despite being invited.

Total disrespect, that's how the President of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and Non-Governmental Organisations described government's hosting of “Spotlight on Trinidad and Tobago's Financial Circumstances" - a forum designed to educate the public on the country's economic position.

The Labour Movement was invited to be part of the discussions however they refused to show up.

Prepare for a double digit budget deficit in 2018, and all the spending cuts that will come with it. Prime Minister Rowley set the stage for Monday's budget presentation at his Spotlight forum on Wednesday. He was followed by a slew of speakers who had their own prescriptions for T&T's unbalanced budget.

If the reason for removing the fuel subsidy is that the money can be better spent elsewhere that same logic can be applied to any subsidy (electricity, water, Water Taxi, PTSC, Airbridge, Tobago Ferry etc.). So remove them all and forget about the protection of the masses.

Public Sector Salaries......its is the largest component of our national expenditure.
When you all see police, teachers, nurses etc etc get their 5,8,10% increase plus backpay for the past period where you think the money has to come from?

VAT is not charged on car insurance...there is a 6% Government Tax alone.

Right now it is that portion of the workforce in private employ which is bearing the brunt of the adjustments. Since Baldylocks said the burden should be shared equally Government should cut the Public Service (not just contract workers but permanent employees as well) and/or reduce perks and salaries.

Expenditure needs to be rationalized, start where it's the largest.

Those archaic and colonial era institutions we have called Service Commissions (their existence are written into our constitution) plus the donkey balls unions and associations are the two major hindrances to Public Service adjustments.

Although public servants monies are petty as compared to other organizations, it’s the quantity of monies being allocated to pay them is the problem.
They need to freeze their wages which was done previously i believe in 1988.

chinese have the low end casinos rumshop style

the high end casinos are owned by the 1% or appear to be run by turkish folks as a front

casinos appear to be the most flourishing business in the country
there are possibly more casinos than chinese restaurants

since manning days EVERY govt has talked about seriously taxing casinos
but they appear to be holding back from taxing them..................

taxing casinos is a monumental effort though
how do you tax a cash business ?
they dont even tax carnival fetes or monitor how many ppl walk in a fete
far less a casino

No tax increases until the GORTT can show it is capturing the majority of taxes due.

Casino s and members clubs operate under archaic legislation...regulate and tax.

Get local on shore energy sector stimulated and operating....this industry is the single largest, fastest and most local content sector to positively impact the Forex issue.
