There might be some confusion here.

I think this may apply to people who have allowed their drivers permit to expire and have not renewed it.

I do not think it applies to those who are renewing just prior to expiry or around the date of expiry.

Does it mean that if your permit expires 1/1/2018 and you renew on 2/1/2018, that you have to pay those fees?

Some clarification is needed here.

boboloops, within 6 months of expiry..its $500 to renew...or $1000 if you want 10 years

anything more than that, the fee is higher

what so hard to understand

It can be confusing. Thought the time periods stated was how long the permit could be renewed for
