the question is vague. Are you asking because indo-trinidadians refer to as indians that this is a reason for racial tension in T+T?

understood. ok what i am asking is if we indians like to be refered to as "indians" in Trinidad as opposed to Trinidadians or West Indians, is it because we simply want to be differentiated from the other major race because of dislike etc? why do we want to stand out as indians?

Not stand out, but just a way to identify your physical attributes. Straight hair, mostly lighter shade of skin, small penis etc..

Just like with any race. If 'Indian' or 'East Indian' descent defines someone physically, it's up to other people or the person them self not to differenciate out of hate. It's a social thing. Standing out is also a social thing. Where's the problem there? Taking it too far? As far as I see in this country, racialism, or when the line is crossed is hardly because of culture. It's just good ole small mindedness.

hmmm ...... to be a bit clique here "if you dont know where you came from how can you know where you are going...."

I see it as an appreciation and a matter of ancestral homage - a trait impressed onto by religious teachings also, that the reference to "i am an indian" is made. When really anyone that respects people and their culture would know the statement is really "i am a Trinidadian of Indian decent". But of course the ignorant would exclaim "steupesss.... he/she sayin he/she is ah Indi-yan......"

yet the question can be asked, why is it many people, would say "i'm going back to the motherland or I am an <<insert ethnic>>-American or <<insert color>>-Man". When in fact is it not the land you were born in your motherland and are you not a man as oppose to a <<color>>-man?

If because from the lack of knowledge of "where i came from" by the other major group and reluctance by many, perpetuated mostly in American and filtered down into this country and even seemingly endorsed by a Prime Minister's statement "correcting the historical imbalance....", that some compensation is necessary to correct the wrongs of 400 plus years of history is required to move forward then I would have to say no, it is not the indo-trinidadians appreciation of their past that is cause for racial tension...

There is no such thing as a race called trinidadian or Indian or American etc etc....

There are only 4 races of human beings in the world

1. Negroid - aka Africans, Blacks, Negroes etc
2. Caucasian- Both Whites(N. American, Eropean) and Indians/Arabs (Iranian, Iraqi, Lighter skinned East Indians)
3. Mongoloid - Chineese, Asia Minor, Japaneese etc (almond eye people)
4. Aborigini - As Found in Australia and Papa New Guini etc...

There are also unclassified races...eg Dravidians(dark skinned Indians, Sri Lankans etc)

So in other words light skinned East Indians and Dark skinned indians belong to two different races.

(excuse spelling)

Most people belong to one of these races......(unless you are mixed with 2)
