TTASA Drag Racing Championship: Round 1

TTASA Drag Racing Championship: Round 1

The 2019 motorsport season kicked off with drag racing action at the Wallerfield International Raceway, for the first round of the TTASA 2019 Drag Racing Championship. Just over forty competitors across nine competition brackets participated in the two day event which was split in to Test and Tune, followed by qualifying on Saturday 19th January and competition/grudge runs on Sunday 20th January.

The formation of a new sub-committee to plan and execute TTASA Drag Racing proved to be very successful as the event operated within a timely manner. Completed competition ended early enough to facilitate almost two hours of grudge runs and a same day prize giving ceremony, all of which received many praises from racers, spectators and sponsors alike.

A few changes in rules such as one loss knockout until finals at which a best of 3 system is used, helped stream line the day’s proceedings. Additional rules such as the introduction of bonus points for the top qualifier for each bracket now encourage racers to participate in the Qualifying sessions.

Extensive track prep lead by Sheldon Bissessar, allowed many drivers and riders to set new Personal Bests, such as Kervin Rebeiro with a 7.6s pass in his 1JZ powered 2nd Gen RX7, to claim fastest car of the day. On two wheels it was Garven Gomez to set his personal best of 8.67s, however an incident on a subsequent run prevented him from bettering this time throughout the day. The Trinidad and Tobago Automobile Sport Association would like to thank all those involved in making this first drag racing event for 2019 successful. Special thanks to the marshals of the Ford Club, sponsors, event staff, racers and spectators, we couldn’t have done it without you!
