TTRC Tarmac Independence All Stages Rally (Wallerfield)
    - 31th August 2000

article by Nerbert Marin and Duane Boodasingh
photography by Nebert Marin

The much anticipated showdown between Peter Morris in his spanking new EVO VI and the Flying Dutchman in his EVO I (formerly campaigned by Morris), did not take place. As it turned out the Dutchman was having difficulty tuning the GEMS ECU but what happened to Peter while tuning his ECU was mind blowing; (engine blowing!). That's right, the engine was laid to rest at Wallerfield after a private (de)tuning session.

The rally attracted new competitors in Mark Cheekes and Nicholas Hospedales driving an Accent that they recently aquired from K. Mc Shine. More on them later.

Wayne Persad did not make it to the rally but his navigator David Gibbon brought the EVO IV after lunch and put on a fantastic show of skill and control on the gravel corners. If there is such a thing as a precision 4 wheel drift, that is what he was doing - Oh yeah - the correct term is "Text-book maneuver". David had the crowd spellbound. Gerald Carrington sat down with David and appeared to be very comfortable at those high speed.

The highlight of the day was the driving put down by Mark Cheekes who managed the 4th place finish. After the race I had to ask Mark whether his navigator was pulling the handbrakes on the corners to cause the back to come around (induced oversteer), but he said no. The car apparently has "tremendous oversteer". The Accent was very exciting to watch and I'm sure he made his supporters proud. By the way, besides me and a few other people, about 5 in all, the entire crowd of supporters was there to support Mark and Nicholas Hospedales in the CIL sponsored car. Check the photos.

Hey rally fans what the hell happened, where were you?

The next rally is on Sunday 17th. September 2000 at Reform Village, come out and support the teams. Bring women!!!! Guys, women like to watch rally and we like to watch women!

This rally did not count for championship points but all the competitors drove hard and represented their sponsors well. We would like to see all the "commentators" that criticize drag racers, while propping up rally drivers as bigger heroes, come out and support your rally teams in your numbers. This is where the driving you boast about can be seen. And don't forget the women.
