A man who went to steal limes from a tree at a house in Barataria on Friday afternoon was mauled to death by two Rottweiler dogs who caught him as he was leaving the premises with his ill-gotten loot in hand.
The victim, police said, had not been identified up to late yesterday but they suspect he may be a market vendor known as King, who hails from Pundit Street, El Socorro, and who normally sells limes in the San Juan Market. Police said the incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the residence of Jennifer Martindale at 61 Fifth Street.
According to police, the deceased gained access to the compound by climbing a wall at the back of Martindale's home from Tru Valu supermarket's compound. He then picked a bagfull of limes.
As he was making his way out of the compound, a "pot-hound" dog spotted him and started to bark, alerting the two mixed Rottweilers who were sitting at the front gate of the house. At the time Martindale was not at home.
The dogs caught the lime thief and mauled him, ripping off his clothing and shoes. The victim was not able to escape the dogs' attack.
A neighbour, police said, was alerted by the man's screams for help and saw the dogs dragging the victim about the yard. The police and Martindale were notified. Martindale, police said, entered the yard and restrained the dogs before officers entered the compound to process the scene where the incident occurred.
Police said Martindale told them that it was not the first time her dogs had attacked thieves who were caught stealing fruits on her compound.
She told of another incident when a man entered the compound and stole a quantity of breadfruit from a tree. He was caught by the dogs while making his escape with the stolen goods but he managed to escape by jumping over a wall.
District Medical Officer Dr Olawe visited the scene and ordered the man's body be removed for a post mortem. A team of officers led by Acting Insp Garfield Stewart, Sgt James, and Cpls Maynard and PC James of the Barataria Police Station visited the scene. Maynard is investigating the incident. (AS)

He placed a gun to the driver's head and ordered him to drive, saying he had just shot four people on the compound.
The man drove off, but jumped out of the vehicle and alerted others that the suspect was behind him. Ramnarine also emerged from the vehicle and attempted to run, but was shot by police.

A PORT OF SPAIN magistrate yesterday imposed a four-year jail term on the man who admitted to robbing a friend of newly crowned Chutney Soca Monarch Kris “KI” Persad outside the artiste’s home, just hours after he captured the title.
Magistrate Melvin Daniel, presiding in the Fourth (B) Court, said the acts of criminals would not be tolerated by the court. He said persons “cannot have an entire nation in fear and expect little or no consequence for their actions”.
Daniel made the statement moments before he sent 23-year-old Fabien James to jail for the February 12 robbery, which occurred around 4 a.m., along Third Avenue, Barataria.
“Everyday, we read about a murder in the newspapers. There comes a time when we have to say enough is enough because it (the crime situation) is getting totally out of hand. There is nothing more prevalent in society than these type of offences, and a natural consequence of these type of offences is jail,” said Daniel.
In addition to the robbery charge, James was also charged with being in possession of a home-made shotgun. On that charge, he was also ordered to serve a jail term of four years. The sentences, however, are to run concurrently, meaning James will only serve four years.
On Monday, when he first appeared in court, James, of Thomasine Street, Laventille, pleaded guilty to both charges and was remanded into custody, pending sentence.
During his mitigation plea on Wednesday, defence attorney Patrick Godson-Phillip asked that the magistrate exercise leniency when passing sentence, given that his client had been shot to the chest during the robbery.
He had stated then that James was a first-time offender; however, a criminal background trace showed he had previously served two years in prison for robbery.
Around 4 a.m., on the day of the incident, a group of friends and relatives of “KI” had arrived at the home of the artiste to celebrate his victory in the Chutney Soca Monarch competition at the Queen’s Park Oval, in Port of Spain.
It was while one of the celebrants was seated in his vehicle that James, armed with a shotgun, approached and demanded the man hand over the keys to his Nissan Wingroad motorcar.
James then proceeded to snatch a $2,200 gold chain from around the man’s neck before the victim pulled out his licensed firearm and shot James once to the chest.
Persad was not at home at the time but arrived moments later and called the police. Constable Kevin Reyes of the Barataria Criminal Investigations department (CID) laid the charges.

A former soldier, who was one of two people shot and wounded by police during a reported high-speed chase and shootout in Chaguanas one week ago, has died.
Durant Phillip-Pitt, of Edinburgh, Chaguanas, succumbed to his injuries at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope on Monday.
A post mortem conducted on his body at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday revealed Phillip-Pitt died as a result of injuries consistent with a car accident.
Phillip-Pitt, police said, was not shot during the reported exchange of gunfire between police and the front seat passenger in the Nissan AD wagon.
Police said they had responded to a report that the 24-year-old son of a doctor and his 25-year-old girlfriend were held up and robbed of a Mitsubishi Sportero van and other valuables around 11 p.m. last Thursday.
Two men, one armed with a gun held up the couple outside the woman's Jonathan Trace, Cunupia, Chaguanas, home. A third suspect drove off with the van.
A report was made and police went in search of the suspects and spotted the wagon along Johnson Street, Enterprise, Chaguanas.
Officers said they attempted to intercept the vehicle, when they were fired upon and they returned fire during the chase. Phillip-Pitt, police said, crashed it into two trees at the side of the road.
Police said the other suspect was shot in the back. They found in his possession a 9mm pistol loaded with three live rounds of ammunition clutched in his hand.
He remains in serious condition at hospital and is paralysed from his waist down as the bullet remains lodged in his back, police said.
Phillip-Pitt was dishonourably discharged from the Regiment on March 5, 2005. Police said he was well-known to be involved in robberies and other crimes within the Central Division and he was detained on several occasions.
The stolen van was later found abandoned at Cocoloco Road, Todds Road.
ASP Kenrick Edwards is probing the incident.
