Cops kill two thieves

Sunday, February 20 2011

CENTRAL Division police officers who responded quickly to a robbery at a bakery were able to confront three thieves, however, two were shot and killed while returning fire yesterday.

Officers have since launched a massive manhunt for the third suspect, who up to last night remained at large. The two dead thieves are yet to be identified.

According to a police report, at about 4.45 pm, three armed men entered Treats Bakery, Endeavour Road, Chaguanas, where they announced a hold up. Police said the men proceeded to rob the proprietress and two other female employees of their cash, jewelry and cellphones. The men then escaped.

An all point bulletin was subsequently sent out and a party of officers including Supt Celestine Phillip, ASP Joseph Isaac, Insp Alleyne and Pragg, Sgt Nobbie and officers of the Central Division Task Force and CID quickly responded and cordoned off the area. The Special Anti- Crime Unit (SAUTT) helicopter — the Viper One also responded carrying out aerial surveillance.

The three men, fitting the description, were spotted a short distance away and were confronted. However, the officers were allegedly shot at, forcing them to return fire. Two of the thieves were killed and the third managed to escape. Police reportedly recovered a pistol on the scene.

Lime thief mauled to death by Rottweilers
By Akile Simon

Story Created: Apr 9, 2011 at 11:44 PM ECT

Story Updated: Apr 10, 2011 at 12:45 AM ECT

A man who went to steal limes from a tree at a house in Barataria on Friday afternoon was mauled to death by two Rottweiler dogs who caught him as he was leaving the premises with his ill-gotten loot in hand.

The victim, police said, had not been identified up to late yesterday but they suspect he may be a market vendor known as King, who hails from Pundit Street, El Socorro, and who normally sells limes in the San Juan Market. Police said the incident occurred around 1 p.m. at the residence of Jennifer Martindale at 61 Fifth Street.

According to police, the deceased gained access to the compound by climbing a wall at the back of Martindale's home from Tru Valu supermarket's compound. He then picked a bagfull of limes.

As he was making his way out of the compound, a "pot-hound" dog spotted him and started to bark, alerting the two mixed Rottweilers who were sitting at the front gate of the house. At the time Martindale was not at home.

The dogs caught the lime thief and mauled him, ripping off his clothing and shoes. The victim was not able to escape the dogs' attack.

A neighbour, police said, was alerted by the man's screams for help and saw the dogs dragging the victim about the yard. The police and Martindale were notified. Martindale, police said, entered the yard and restrained the dogs before officers entered the compound to process the scene where the incident occurred.

Police said Martindale told them that it was not the first time her dogs had attacked thieves who were caught stealing fruits on her compound.

She told of another incident when a man entered the compound and stole a quantity of breadfruit from a tree. He was caught by the dogs while making his escape with the stolen goods but he managed to escape by jumping over a wall.

District Medical Officer Dr Olawe visited the scene and ordered the man's body be removed for a post mortem. A team of officers led by Acting Insp Garfield Stewart, Sgt James, and Cpls Maynard and PC James of the Barataria Police Station visited the scene. Maynard is investigating the incident. (AS)

AN INTRUDER was shot and killed when he attempted to rob a pharmacist at his home in Chaguanas on Monday night.

The dead man, who was not yet identified up to late yesterday, was shot once in his chest and died in the yard of the home of the man he came to rob.

The shooting happened at around 2.45 a.m. at the home of Ravi Sobie, 35, at Edinburgh Village. Other relatives were asleep in the house at the time, police said.

Sobie told police he too was asleep when he was awakened by a noise in his bedroom.

Sobie said he saw a man with a cutlass, and the man announced a hold-up.

The man demanded valuables, and Sobie drew his licensed firearm. Sobie told police the man raised his cutlass to attack him and he fired a shot, hitting him in the chest.

The man dropped the cutlass and ran out of the house.

Sobie contacted the police and a party of police officers, led by Senior Superintendent Edward Castillo, visited the scene.

Police found the man's body in the yard of Sobie's house.

The body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre.

Acting Sergeant Heeralal is investigating.

A man shot by police in Arima yesterday died after falling into a river where he was impaled on a metal spike.

The police responded to a call by a man around 4 a.m. yesterday who said he had been robbed by two men.

The men, who were said to be around 25 and 14 years old, were spotted by police near a temple at Mausica and pursued.

A radio report yesterday stated that one police officer's gun fell during the pursuit and was grabbed by the older suspect.

The dead man has not yet been identified.

THE mother of Jonathan Sanchez called for justice, swearing that she will "go down on her knees" to get it, following the shooting death of her son at the hands of the police in Arima on Saturday morning around 4 a.m.

Sanchez's uncle, who did not want to be named promised to work "obeah" on the policeman who killed his nephew. He said that person would be "eating out of dustbins", for what he did.

Ann Sanchez insisted that her son was a hard-working man who did joinery and helped his sister.

Asked why her son was targeted and killed by the police she said, "I don't know, I don't know what is going on only God knows as he is the biggest judge".

Officers responded to a call by a man around 4 a.m. who said he had been robbed by two men.

The men, who were said to be around 25 and 14 years old, were spotted by police near a temple at Mausica Road, Arima and pursued.

During the chase one police officer's gun fell and was picked up by Jonathan Sanchez.

Another officer then shot the man once. Sanchez fell into a large drain and was impaled. Police later said the robbery victim's valuables were found on the dead man's 14-year-old accomplice.

Ann Sanchez who spoke to reporters yesterday afternoon in the porch of her Arima home said, "my son is a hard-working child. He does joinery and I have never known him to be in no trouble and no conflict with no police. I want justice...justice have to prevail because when I put my knees on the ground my almighty God will hear."

She continued, "I eh even see my child body yet and they have meh up and down since yesterday (Saturday). They have my child ID card, his driver's permit, his cellphone, his bank card everything. They have all he cash because he did get pay Friday and plus he play Play Whe and he win.

"My child does work hard and I don't like that, and I don't like how my child die and that is wrong what they did to him", she said.

Josanne Sanchez, Jonathan's sister alleged that the police conspired to cover up the killing by saying that he fell and was impaled by large pieces of metal that were embedded in the drain banks.

She said she heard that after they shot him police leaned him against the bank of the drain and one officer was heard asking if he was dead.

She said that, "one of the neighbours say they heard the 14-year old saying,. "we living right there you know and we now come from liming and we going right there and police start to beat him with gun butt in his face and kick him to the ground and they start to kick him up on the ground and mashing him in he head and they handcuff and throw him in the back of the van and they went with him".

The 14-year-old remains in custody.

Police said yesterday that they were investigating the shooting.

A post mortem is expected to be performed today on Sanchez's body at the Forensic Science Centre.

Police kill gunman after night of terror in Couva

Story Created: Jan 27, 2012 at 11:01 PM ECT

Story Updated: Jan 27, 2012 at 11:01 PM ECT

A 37-year-old crab catcher was shot and killed by police at a gated community in Couva on Thursday night after he allegedly terrorised and shot at residents.

Ramlal Ramnarine, a father of two, of First Street, Pranz Gardens, Couva, died at the compound around 7.30 p.m. at the Savonetta Estate.

Police said the deceased was dressed in camouflage clothing.

A resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said around 6.50 p.m. another resident heard gunshots ring out on the compound and decided to check.

The man jumped in his car and, while driving around, he saw Ramnarine jump over a wall and enter the compound.

He said Ramnarine was walking erratically on the road brandishing a firearm. The resident called neighbours on his cellphone, when Ramnarine saw him and fired three shots at the vehicle.

The back windscreen was shattered, and neighbours quickly alerted one another that a shooter was on the loose.

The residents hid in their homes and Ramnarine entered an abandoned house on the compound. The owner of the house was contacted and he arrived within minutes with police vehicles following.

Ramnarine came out of the house and stood in the roadway and flagged down one of the vehicles.

Unaware that he was the shooter since he was wearing camouflage clothing, the driver of one of the vehicles stopped and Ramnarine sat in the back seat.

He placed a gun to the driver's head and ordered him to drive, saying he had just shot four people on the compound.

The man drove off, but jumped out of the vehicle and alerted others that the suspect was behind him. Ramnarine also emerged from the vehicle and attempted to run, but was shot by police.

Ramnarine's sister, Diane Kumarsingh, said he was shot at least 40 times, since his entire body was riddled with bullets.

"We want to get answers," Kumarsingh said. "Even if he was trespassing, why shoot him so much about his body?"

Couva police are investigating.

Cops identify man shot dead

Story Updated: Feb 3, 2012 at 11:08 PM ECT

POLICE have identified the body of a man who was shot and killed after he and two other persons fired shots at three other men in Laventille on Thursday.

The dead man has been identified as Gabriel Vialva, 18, of Waterwheel Road, Diego Martin.

He was positively identified by relatives at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday. His relatives declined to speak saying that the media had labelled him as a gunman.

Police believe Vialva was shot and killed by accident by one of his accomplices while he and two other men were chasing two brothers and another man at Trou Macaque Road, Laventille.

The brothers- David Grant, 29, and Atiba Grant, 32, remained warded in serious condition at the Port of Spain General Hospital after they were shot about their bodies while fleeing.

Police said around 6.30 a.m. yesterday, the Grant brothers were in company with a 36-year-old man outside their home when a silver Nissan AD Wagon motorcar pulled up alongside them and shots were fired.

Actually,he pointed the gun while outside at the driver, and told the owner he now killed 4 people, the driver then unbuckled his seatbelt and the warning tone started going off in the vehicle, ramnarie asked what was making that sound, and he told him the trunk was open, just go close it,and he'll carry him anywhere he wants to go (ramnarine). When he walked to the back of the vehicle to close it,the driver got out and started to run, after realizing he got hookwinked, ramnarine began shooting up the vehicle.

Bandit shot in robbery attempt
By Rickie Ramdass rickie.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com

NEWLY crowned Chutney Soca Monarch Kris "KI" Persad narrowly escaped falling victim to a bandit outside his home after winning the title yesterday morning.

Persad arrived at his Barataria home just after 4 a.m.—mere minutes after winning the crown and million-dollar prize—only to realise that a friend of his, who had come to his home to celebrate the victory, was approached by a bandit who tried to rob him.

However, the bandit was shot once in the chest by his intended victim.

Police said a group of friends and relatives of the artiste arrived at his Third Street home from the Queen's Park Oval to celebrate his success in the competition, when the bandit approached and announced a hold-up.

The man, who police said lived at Thomasine Street, Laventille, was armed with a shotgun. He reportedly approached a member of the group, who is a security officer, and snatched his gold chain. He also demanded the security officer hand over the keys to his Nissan Wingroad motorcar, to which he complied.

Investigators said the security officer pulled out his licensed firearm and fired one shot at the bandit, hitting him in the chest. The incident took place on the roadway outside the artiste's house.

Officers said about five minutes later Persad arrived at his home and saw the bleeding man on the ground and called police.

A team of officers from the Barataria Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrived on the scene minutes later and rushed the injured man to the Port of Spain General Hospital, where up to late yesterday he remained warded in a stable condition.

Police said they also recovered the shotgun at the scene of the incident.

Speaking to members of the media yesterday, Persad confirmed he was not at home at the time, but stated that he believed he could have fallen victim.

He said after the Chutney Soca Monarch he and several family members stopped for a brief moment along Ariapita Avenue before heading home.

"We stopped there for ten minutes. If we did not stop, we would have been the first ones to arrive here, in the dark, so it could have been us to get rob," Persad said.

Asked to further describe what had taken place, Persad said he did not wish to speak of the incident in too much detail, stating that it would bring "negativity" to a time of celebration.

PC Kevin Reyes, of the Barataria CID, is continuing investigations into the incident.

Bandit to serve four years for robbery outside KI’s home
By Rickie Ramdass rickie.ramdass@trinidadexpress.com

Story Created: Mar 2, 2012 at 9:00 PM ECT

Story Updated: Mar 2, 2012 at 9:00 PM ECT
A PORT OF SPAIN magistrate yesterday imposed a four-year jail term on the man who admitted to robbing a friend of newly crowned Chutney Soca Monarch Kris “KI” Persad outside the artiste’s home, just hours after he captured the title.
Magistrate Melvin Daniel, presiding in the Fourth (B) Court, said the acts of criminals would not be tolerated by the court. He said persons “cannot have an entire nation in fear and expect little or no consequence for their actions”.
Daniel made the statement moments before he sent 23-year-old Fabien James to jail for the February 12 robbery, which occurred around 4 a.m., along Third Avenue, Barataria.
“Everyday, we read about a murder in the newspapers. There comes a time when we have to say enough is enough because it (the crime situation) is getting totally out of hand. There is nothing more prevalent in society than these type of offences, and a natural consequence of these type of offences is jail,” said Daniel.
In addition to the robbery charge, James was also charged with being in possession of a home-made shotgun. On that charge, he was also ordered to serve a jail term of four years. The sentences, however, are to run concurrently, meaning James will only serve four years.
On Monday, when he first appeared in court, James, of Thomasine Street, Laventille, pleaded guilty to both charges and was remanded into custody, pending sentence.
During his mitigation plea on Wednesday, defence attorney Patrick Godson-Phillip asked that the magistrate exercise leniency when passing sentence, given that his client had been shot to the chest during the robbery.
He had stated then that James was a first-time offender; however, a criminal background trace showed he had previously served two years in prison for robbery.
Around 4 a.m., on the day of the incident, a group of friends and relatives of “KI” had arrived at the home of the artiste to celebrate his victory in the Chutney Soca Monarch competition at the Queen’s Park Oval, in Port of Spain.
It was while one of the celebrants was seated in his vehicle that James, armed with a shotgun, approached and demanded the man hand over the keys to his Nissan Wingroad motorcar.
James then proceeded to snatch a $2,200 gold chain from around the man’s neck before the victim pulled out his licensed firearm and shot James once to the chest.
Persad was not at home at the time but arrived moments later and called the police. Constable Kevin Reyes of the Barataria Criminal Investigations department (CID) laid the charges.

A former soldier, who was one of two people shot and wounded by police during a reported high-speed chase and shootout in Chaguanas one week ago, has died.

Durant Phillip-Pitt, of Edinburgh, Chaguanas, succumbed to his injuries at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope on Monday.

A post mortem conducted on his body at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday revealed Phillip-Pitt died as a result of injuries consistent with a car accident.

Phillip-Pitt, police said, was not shot during the reported exchange of gunfire between police and the front seat passenger in the Nissan AD wagon.

Police said they had responded to a report that the 24-year-old son of a doctor and his 25-year-old girlfriend were held up and robbed of a Mitsubishi Sportero van and other valuables around 11 p.m. last Thursday.

Two men, one armed with a gun held up the couple outside the woman's Jonathan Trace, Cunupia, Chaguanas, home. A third suspect drove off with the van.

A report was made and police went in search of the suspects and spotted the wagon along Johnson Street, Enterprise, Chaguanas.

Officers said they attempted to intercept the vehicle, when they were fired upon and they returned fire during the chase. Phillip-Pitt, police said, crashed it into two trees at the side of the road.

Police said the other suspect was shot in the back. They found in his possession a 9mm pistol loaded with three live rounds of ammunition clutched in his hand.

He remains in serious condition at hospital and is paralysed from his waist down as the bullet remains lodged in his back, police said.

Phillip-Pitt was dishonourably discharged from the Regiment on March 5, 2005. Police said he was well-known to be involved in robberies and other crimes within the Central Division and he was detained on several occasions.

The stolen van was later found abandoned at Cocoloco Road, Todds Road.

ASP Kenrick Edwards is probing the incident.

Cops: Target missed, partner killed instead
Shooting gone wrong

TWO men went to the Laventille area yesterday with the intention of killing another man.
They focused their attention on their intended target before coming out of a white B-13 car.
The men started to shoot but the person they had come to kill was not hit and managed to escape.
However, one of the gunmen was not so lucky. He was shot behind the head and in the back from bullets coming from the other gunman's weapon "by mistake".
This was how police related the shooting death of 27-year-old Akino "Blacks" Bascombe who was gunned down at Upper Wharton Street around 1.30 p.m.
He was killed instantly.
His body was found lying face-down next to a drain a short distance from where the car had pulled up earlier, police said.
After shooting Bascombe, the other gunman jumped back into the car and sped off, leaving his friend behind.
When the Sunday Express visited the scene yesterday, crime scene detectives were processing the area, looking for clues.
A team of officers from the Besson Street Police Station, Inter Agency Task Force (IATF) and Port of Spain Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headed by ASP Ajith Persad also visited the scene and carried out enquiries.
Bascombe's body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy is expected to take place tomorrow.ss.com/news/Cops__Target_missed__partner_killed_instead-158331445.html
