Police kill market thief
Cop shot in struggle for gun
A man who stole from market vendors and delivery trucks to feed his drug addiction was shot and killed by police yesterday.
He was identified as 36-year-old Jodie Parris, of Commission Street, Mon Repos.
A police officer, attached to the San Fernando Task Force, was also shot during the arrest outside JTA Supermarket, Southern Main Road, Marabella.
Constable Ronnie Samaroo was shot in the abdomen by Parris who wrestled away his weapon.
Constable Cupid, who accompanied Samaroo, responded by shooting Parris multiple times about the body.
The officers were near the Marabella market when they observed Parris and another man breaking into a Kiss Bakery delivery truck around 8.10 a.m.
Police said the officers called out to Parris, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants.
Parris resisted and he tried fighting off Samaroo.
Police said Parris grabbed Samaroo's weapon and fired a shot at the officers, injuring Samaroo. Cupid fired to save Samaroo.
Parris was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital in a police vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Samaroo, 27, underwent emergency surgery last evening.
His brother, Neil Samaroo, said the officer was in stable but serious condition at hospital.
"The doctors said, however, that we have nothing to worry about and he will be okay."
Samaroo lives in Debe.
An eyewitness said, "The rasta man (Parris) was near a Kiss van, like he was going to take something and two police officers came same time. There was a struggle and the police tried to handcuff the rasta man. But he pulled out the officer gun and shoot him. The other policeman defended his partner by shooting the rasta man."
A vendor, who asked not to be named, described Parris as a nuisance.
"We know him real good. He would thief our provision and sell it. And when the delivery trucks come by JTA he would open the door and take things and run."
Police said the officers were in search of Parris yesterday, when they found him near the delivery truck.
In Mon Repos, Parris' neighbour, Andre Moore, said the dead man and his brothers were orphaned as children after their parents died. They lived with a grandmother who died several years ago.
The neighbour said, "He was a quiet, good man, until he started using drugs. He started stealing things from people to sustain this drug addiction. But he was never violent. He would help out people in the community, doing odd jobs.".
Parris was arrested several times and spent most of his life in prison, Moore said.
"This is the longest I ever see him outside. He was released from prison about four years ago. But he grow up in jail, from small jail to big jail.
"He moved out of his brothers' house four months ago, because he started stealing from them too. I think he was staying Marabella," he said.
Parris was wanted for several incidents of break-ins and larceny in the Mon Repos and Marabella districts. And he has appeared in court in the past for a series of crimes ranging from robbery to possession of marijuana.
The entrance to JTA Supermarket was cordoned off for several hours yesterday, as Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene.
A senior official at JTA said "We are co-operating with the police. But we have asked for them to allow us to open the back gate so delivery trucks can off-load goods".
A team of officers including Assistant Commissioner of Police Fitzroy Frederick, Senior Superintendent Irvin Hackshaw and Inspector Anthony Charles visited the scene.

A MAN who was wanted in connection with several offences including attempted murder and firearm-related offences was shot and killed by police on Sunday evening.
The dead man has been identified as 22-year-old Derry "Monster" Dyette, of Bagatelle Extension, Febeau Village, San Juan.
Officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) said over the past several days they had been receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding Dyette, describing him as "a pest in the area."
Police said at around midday they went to Bagatelle Extension with the intention of arresting Dyette but was greeted with gunfire.
After shooting at the officers, Dyette managed to escape through a track in the area.
Officers said they searched several houses in the area for close to four hours before they received a tip-off that Dyette was hiding out in a particular house.
When the officers entered the house they were again shot at by Dyette before they returned fire hitting him in the chest. No one else was in the house at the time, police said.
Police said they recovered a .38 revolver, which had one live round and five spent shells at the scene.
However, Dyette's mother, Lynette Dyette disputed the version given by the police saying that her son was not armed when he was killed.
Speaking to the Express at her home yesterday evening, the woman said her son had just finished taking a shower when he was alerted by people in the area that the police were searching for him.
She said, Dyette quickly wrapped a towel around him and attempted to flee the area but was shot in the lower back by the officers.
The woman said her son then attempted to hide from the officers in a house in the area.
"His sister was also there with him soaking up all of the blood and so on... Later on the police went into the house and shouted at him to drop the gun and his sister said 'what gun? He does not have any gun'," said the woman.
She said soon after, she heard a volley of shots fired and later saw the officers placing Dyette in the back of the police vehicle.
"When they went in he surrendered himself but they still shot him," she said.
The woman admitted that her son was wanted in connection with shooting at two women in the area, but insisted he was not armed when he was killed by the officers.
Assistant Superintendent Mahabir of the North Eastern Division is carrying out enquiries into the matter.

AN EXCHANGE of gunfire between police and three men at Kelly Village, Caroni yesterday ended in the death of a 25-year-old Santa Cruz man and the arrest of another.
The dead man remained unidentified up to late yesterday.
Police said the unidentified man and the other man were linked to the stealing of a vehicle from St Joseph on Tuesday night.
Around 6.15 a.m. police responded to a report that the stolen Ford Ranger was found abandoned at Mary Allen Street, Kelly Village.
Officers went to the area to retrieve the vehicle when they were approached by three men in a Nissan Tiida.
Police attempted to question the suspects, but the Nissan Tiida sped off and attempted to elude police.
The suspects fired several gunshots at the police and the officers returned fire.
The 25-year-old suspect was shot, and another suspect, a 30-year-old man, was detained for questioning.
A third suspect is being sought by the police.
A resident who witnessed the incident, but spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: "I saw a white car and an unmarked black police vehicle chasing the car. The car was coming into the street. There were three bandits, one bandit was running. When they reached by the corner, the police came out and started to run behind the bandit. They let go a good few shots. Police started to chase the bandits and call for back up. The bandits abandoned the vehicle. One of them got shot".
Police said the deceased was linked to the stealing of a vehicle from the Arouca Police Station several months before.
They said he was linked to several other addresses at Belmont, Arima, and Valsayn.
A party of police officers headed by Superintendent Johnny Abraham and others of the Central Division police visited the scene and are continuing investigations.
In an unrelated incident, police have identified a Toco man who they shot and killed at Guapo on Monday as Akeel Moreno. The man was identified by a female relative on Tuesday, police said.
They were told that he previously lived at Toco, but recently went to live at Warden Road, Point Fortin.
Police said they fired upon Moreno after he advanced towards them with a knife.
Around 2 a.m. police officers were responding to a report by a resident of Park and Southern Main Road that an intruder was inside his hardware.
Upon arrival Moreno was seen by police emerging through a hole on the southern side of the building with a knife in his right hand.
An officer called out to Moreno to stop, but he advanced and the police man fired several shots at him.
He was taken to the Point Fortin Area Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
