Police kill market thief
Cop shot in struggle for gun

A man who stole from market vendors and delivery trucks to feed his drug addiction was shot and killed by police yesterday.

He was identified as 36-year-old Jodie Parris, of Commission Street, Mon Repos.

A police officer, attached to the San Fernando Task Force, was also shot during the arrest outside JTA Supermarket, Southern Main Road, Marabella.

Constable Ronnie Samaroo was shot in the abdomen by Parris who wrestled away his weapon.

Constable Cupid, who accompanied Samaroo, responded by shooting Parris multiple times about the body.

The officers were near the Marabella market when they observed Parris and another man breaking into a Kiss Bakery delivery truck around 8.10 a.m.

Police said the officers called out to Parris, who was wanted on several outstanding warrants.

Parris resisted and he tried fighting off Samaroo.

Police said Parris grabbed Samaroo's weapon and fired a shot at the officers, injuring Samaroo. Cupid fired to save Samaroo.

Parris was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital in a police vehicle. He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

Samaroo, 27, underwent emergency surgery last evening.

His brother, Neil Samaroo, said the officer was in stable but serious condition at hospital.

"The doctors said, however, that we have nothing to worry about and he will be okay."

Samaroo lives in Debe.

An eyewitness said, "The rasta man (Parris) was near a Kiss van, like he was going to take something and two police officers came same time. There was a struggle and the police tried to handcuff the rasta man. But he pulled out the officer gun and shoot him. The other policeman defended his partner by shooting the rasta man."

A vendor, who asked not to be named, described Parris as a nuisance.

"We know him real good. He would thief our provision and sell it. And when the delivery trucks come by JTA he would open the door and take things and run."

Police said the officers were in search of Parris yesterday, when they found him near the delivery truck.

In Mon Repos, Parris' neighbour, Andre Moore, said the dead man and his brothers were orphaned as children after their parents died. They lived with a grandmother who died several years ago.

The neighbour said, "He was a quiet, good man, until he started using drugs. He started stealing things from people to sustain this drug addiction. But he was never violent. He would help out people in the community, doing odd jobs.".

Parris was arrested several times and spent most of his life in prison, Moore said.

"This is the longest I ever see him outside. He was released from prison about four years ago. But he grow up in jail, from small jail to big jail.

"He moved out of his brothers' house four months ago, because he started stealing from them too. I think he was staying Marabella," he said.

Parris was wanted for several incidents of break-ins and larceny in the Mon Repos and Marabella districts. And he has appeared in court in the past for a series of crimes ranging from robbery to possession of marijuana.

The entrance to JTA Supermarket was cordoned off for several hours yesterday, as Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene.

A senior official at JTA said "We are co-operating with the police. But we have asked for them to allow us to open the back gate so delivery trucks can off-load goods".

A team of officers including Assistant Commissioner of Police Fitzroy Frederick, Senior Superintendent Irvin Hackshaw and Inspector Anthony Charles visited the scene.

Criminal deportee shot dead during hold-up
By Gyasi Gonzales gyasi.gonzales@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jun 28, 2012 at 11:00 PM ECT
Story Updated: Jun 28, 2012 at 11:00 PM ECT
A CRIMINAL deportee was shot dead yesterday morning when he attempted to rob a Port of Spain businessman at gunpoint in a Henry Street, Port of Spain, car park. (• See Page 8)
The incident happened at 9.10 a.m.
Police said around that time, the businessman had parked his car in the car park, located along Upper Henry Street, near Prince Street.
Police said when the man got out of the car, he was approached by Lyndon Everson Marshall, 44, of La Brea, armed with a rusty revolver. He pointed the gun at the businessman and demanded his cash, jewelry and cellular phone. Marshall threatened to kill him if he refused.
The man withdrew his licensed pistol and pointed it at Marshall, but before the alleged bandit could fire off a shot, the businessman shot him five times to the chest.
Marshall ran fifteen feet but then fell to the ground and died face up, with his arms outstretched. His revolver fell out of his hand and landed near his body. Within a few minutes of being shot, he died.
The businessman, along with some of the other businesspeople in the area, called the police, and a team of officers led by Supt Ajith Persad, along with Insp Carmichael, visited the scene.
Police said the man had not been initially identified, but investigators later checked his prints and positively identified him.
Gregory Aboud, president of the Downtown Owners and Merchants Association (DOMA), was also on the scene yesterday and spoke to reporters: "The country is dangerous; we can't change that fact," said Aboud.
He added, "We can't hide from the fact that parking lots, in general, are extremely dangerous, and this is not the only parking lot in Trinidad that is dangerous because, in fact, this should be a warning to all persons who leave their cars in parking lots that it is dangerous, regardless of whether you are in Port of Spain or a shopping mall."
Aboud, however, said he is cautiously confident in the appointment of Jack Warner as the new National Security Minister.
"Mr Warner's credentials precede him in his desire to be an action man, but I must say, we are very cautious in our optimism."
He added, "Because the fact of the matter, if you have sent (Brian) Lara in to bat with a coconut branch, you would end up facing the same difficult prospects, which are that the management system of our protective services is defective, and the good officers or the great officers are not being recognised, and as a result, they are demotivated, and unless we fix that, Mr Warner is going to have a very difficult time."
Port of Spain CID officers are continuing investigations.

Police shoot and kill wanted 'pest'

A MAN who was wanted in connection with several offences including attempted murder and firearm-related offences was shot and killed by police on Sunday evening.
The dead man has been identified as 22-year-old Derry "Monster" Dyette, of Bagatelle Extension, Febeau Village, San Juan.
Officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) said over the past several days they had been receiving numerous complaints from residents regarding Dyette, describing him as "a pest in the area."
Police said at around midday they went to Bagatelle Extension with the intention of arresting Dyette but was greeted with gunfire.
After shooting at the officers, Dyette managed to escape through a track in the area.
Officers said they searched several houses in the area for close to four hours before they received a tip-off that Dyette was hiding out in a particular house.
When the officers entered the house they were again shot at by Dyette before they returned fire hitting him in the chest. No one else was in the house at the time, police said.
Police said they recovered a .38 revolver, which had one live round and five spent shells at the scene.
However, Dyette's mother, Lynette Dyette disputed the version given by the police saying that her son was not armed when he was killed.
Speaking to the Express at her home yesterday evening, the woman said her son had just finished taking a shower when he was alerted by people in the area that the police were searching for him.
She said, Dyette quickly wrapped a towel around him and attempted to flee the area but was shot in the lower back by the officers.
The woman said her son then attempted to hide from the officers in a house in the area.
"His sister was also there with him soaking up all of the blood and so on... Later on the police went into the house and shouted at him to drop the gun and his sister said 'what gun? He does not have any gun'," said the woman.
She said soon after, she heard a volley of shots fired and later saw the officers placing Dyette in the back of the police vehicle.
"When they went in he surrendered himself but they still shot him," she said.
The woman admitted that her son was wanted in connection with shooting at two women in the area, but insisted he was not armed when he was killed by the officers.
Assistant Superintendent Mahabir of the North Eastern Division is carrying out enquiries into the matter.

AN EXCHANGE of gunfire between police and three men at Kelly Village, Caroni yesterday ended in the death of a 25-year-old Santa Cruz man and the arrest of another.
The dead man remained unidentified up to late yesterday.
Police said the unidentified man and the other man were linked to the stealing of a vehicle from St Joseph on Tuesday night.
Around 6.15 a.m. police responded to a report that the stolen Ford Ranger was found abandoned at Mary Allen Street, Kelly Village.
Officers went to the area to retrieve the vehicle when they were approached by three men in a Nissan Tiida.
Police attempted to question the suspects, but the Nissan Tiida sped off and attempted to elude police.
The suspects fired several gunshots at the police and the officers returned fire.
The 25-year-old suspect was shot, and another suspect, a 30-year-old man, was detained for questioning.
A third suspect is being sought by the police.
A resident who witnessed the incident, but spoke on the condition of anonymity, said: "I saw a white car and an unmarked black police vehicle chasing the car. The car was coming into the street. There were three bandits, one bandit was running. When they reached by the corner, the police came out and started to run behind the bandit. They let go a good few shots. Police started to chase the bandits and call for back up. The bandits abandoned the vehicle. One of them got shot".
Police said the deceased was linked to the stealing of a vehicle from the Arouca Police Station several months before.
They said he was linked to several other addresses at Belmont, Arima, and Valsayn.
A party of police officers headed by Superintendent Johnny Abraham and others of the Central Division police visited the scene and are continuing investigations.
In an unrelated incident, police have identified a Toco man who they shot and killed at Guapo on Monday as Akeel Moreno. The man was identified by a female relative on Tuesday, police said.
They were told that he previously lived at Toco, but recently went to live at Warden Road, Point Fortin.
Police said they fired upon Moreno after he advanced towards them with a knife.
Around 2 a.m. police officers were responding to a report by a resident of Park and Southern Main Road that an intruder was inside his hardware.
Upon arrival Moreno was seen by police emerging through a hole on the southern side of the building with a knife in his right hand.
An officer called out to Moreno to stop, but he advanced and the police man fired several shots at him.
He was taken to the Point Fortin Area Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Officers nab 3 gunmen in Arima shoot-out
By Joel Julien joel.julien@trinidadexpress.com

Story Updated: Aug 8, 2012 at 11:58 PM ECT

DETECTIVES from the Arima Criminal Investigations Department recovered two handguns, a shotgun and four shotgun cartridges on Tuesday after being involved in a shoot-out with a carload of gunmen.

It was the first of two shoot-outs involving police in less than 13 hours.

Around 5.30 p.m. on Tuesday, the Arima CID officers were on mobile patrol in Samaroo Village, Arima, when they observed a Nissan Sentra B15 car with four occupants acting suspiciously.

The officers attempted to intercept the vehicle when the occupants opened fire on them.

The officers returned fire. The driver of the Nissan B15 crashed the car in a ditch.

Three of the car's occupants were arrested while the fourth escaped.

One of the suspects, a 25-year-old man from Thomasos Terrace, Sherwood Park, Arima, was injured in the shoot-out and was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope where he is detained under police guard.

The two other men are a 23-year-old from Mendez Drive in Champs Fleurs and a 26-year-old from Olton Road in Arima.

The officers were also able to recover three firearms, two semi-automatic pistols and a shotgun, together with four 12-gauge cartridges.

Enquiries later revealed that around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the gunmen were involved in the shooting of an Arima man. Marcus Monix, 21, was shot while crossing the Priority Bus Route.

According to reports, Monix was crossing the road when a Nissan B15 with four gunmen opened fire on him.

Monix sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand. The Nissan B15 sped off.

The three suspects currently in police custody are assisting the officers in their investigations.

The officers who were involved in the shoot-out and the detention of the gunmen were yesterday commended for their "keen powers of observation".

Public Information officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Sgt Wayne Mystar, in yesterday's daily police briefing, said: "The officers involved in the seizure were Insp Baptiste, PC Bernard, WPC Thomas-Hernandez and PC Ramdial. We tip our hats to these officers on a job well done."

The second shoot-out involving police occurred around 6.15 a.m. yesterday in Caroni.

A 25-year-old Santa Cruz men was fatally shot in that incident.

In an unrelated incident around 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, officers of the Sangre Grande Police Station seized two 16-gauge shotguns in a forested area in Guaico Trace, Sangre Grande.

No one was arrested in that incident. http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Off ... 33926.html

A CRIME spree by three thieves in central Trinidad ended with a shootout with police yesterday afternoon.

The thieves sped off, and the victims reported the robbery at the Chaguanas Police Station.

Within the hour, police received a report of another robbery at Couva where cash and jewelry were also stolen by three armed men in a vehicle fitting the same description.

An all-points bulletin (APB) was issued and several police units from the Central Police Division, under supervision of Supt Johnny Abraham, and Insp Lawrence, as well as Viper One, and the K-9 unit went to Exchange Lots at Couva, where the suspects were cornered in their vehicle.

Police said the three suspects alighted from the vehicle and fired at police.

The driver, a 25-year-old man of Laventille, was detained by police, and another suspect, a 23-year-old man of Chaguanas, was shot in his abdomen and leg.

Cop kills bandit in maxi hold-up

A GUN-WIELDING bandit was shot dead by a police officer yesterday morning when he and another man attempted to rob a maxi-taxi along the Priority Bus Route in Arouca.
The dead man was identified yesterday as Stephen Henry, 20, of Beetham Gardens.
The other bandit escaped.
Henry was said to be well known to police and had a robbery with aggravation matter pending in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Court, for which he was out on bail.
The maxi-taxi driver, who spoke to the Express, did not want to be identified.
Arouca police were also unwilling to release the name of the police officer who shot Henry.
The driver said around 8.30 a.m. he picked up 25 passengers at the Arima maxi-taxi stand when the two bandits entered.
Also in the maxi-taxi was a plainclothes police constable, who was part of a team of officers detailed to investigate a spate of maxi-taxi robberies along the Arima to Port of Spain route.
The driver said he began collecting his fare and noticed that one of the men sat close to the door, while another was on the aisle directly behind the driver.
After collecting his fare he drove the maxi on to the bus route and began heading west.
When the maxi got to Cane Farm, Arouca, one of the bandits pressed the bell for the maxi to stop, which the driver did.
"One of the guys who was sitting behind me then reached over and began picking up my money and a phone and then he began putting his hands in my pocket," said the driver.
"I could not see if he had a gun but I switched off the engine as he ordered me to remove the keys from the ignition, which he then picked up."
The other bandit (Henry) drew a pistol, unravelled two crocus bags and began walking down the aisle, ordering the 25 passengers to "pass thing, money, phone every f****** thing".
One of the other passengers, who also did not want to be named, told the Express: "They need to give that policeman a medal because he was able to scope out them bandit as they board the bus."
He said that Henry attempted to rob the officer but the policeman drew his own pistol and fired at the bandit.
The first bandit ran out the maxi when he heard the gunshot, dropping the driver's keys, while Henry stumbled back and, with his bags of loot still in hand, also ran out the vehicle.
Henry dropped the bag which contained, along with the phones and jewelry he had just stolen, $6,000 belonging to a woman who had made a large withdrawal to conduct business.
Henry then ran towards Cane Farm Junction, with the constable in pursuit.
Running through Cane Farm Road, Henry went onto the Eastern Main Road and ran into LB's Supermarket, where he told two security officers he had just been stabbed.
But the policeman, who got to the supermarket afterwards, explained to the guards that Henry, who had collapsed, was not a victim but a perpetrator.
An Emergency Medical Services ambulance was called, but by the time Henry got to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Centre, Mt Hope he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Arouca police are continuing investigations.

Yes! Well done officer! Wonder if it was only those 2 that were responsible for all the robberies on the bus route?
