WOW, really heart breaking. Imagine how hard it must be for him to explain this to her siblings who are 3 and 4.

I don't see what god has to do with this.

God did not say he is 'not allowed in schools', man did. And what about those who believe in god, did god just abandon them?

So sad to see so much children loose their lives. So much potential lost. So much families scared for life.

I wonder what caused that kid to trip off and go all psycho??

We may never know his motive since he shot himself. But he is such a coward to shoot little defenseless kids multiple times.

A man with a knife has wounded 22 children - at least two of them seriously - and an adult at a primary school in central China.

Time to push for a ban on knives too.

this comment more of less sums it up for me as for the motive and for other tragedies like this one in the past

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed

people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Dear President Obama,

The horrific and tragic incident in Newtown where 20 innocent children and 6 adults where unjustly murdered brought sadness to our hearts. Nothing can match the pain and agony of parents when losing their children. These children are as you have truthfully described in your speech; “the heart of a parent outside his body”. To the grieving parents of Newtown, we say: you are not alone. We shouldn’t let such a tragedy break us down. It brings tears to our eyes when we remember the warmth and joy of embracing our child, our flesh and blood which can’t happen anymore. We mourn with you all the children who fell victims to such cowardly attacks. It was very considerate from you – President Obama- to mention the names of the 20 innocent children who are now only a vivid memory to their parents, love ones, their teachers and friends. We wish that we would stop these innocent lives from being lost and wasted. We hope that a day would come when the thousands of our children can also be remembered and their names listed.

You have our condolences as we say to the people of Newtown: we feel you!

Written on behalf of:

The parents of the thousands innocent children killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen by US air raids and drone attacks

Two incidents that changed gun policy in countries:

Dunblane school massacre
March 1996. 43-year-old man entered Dunblane Primary School, Scotland, armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide.

In response to the following debates and inquiries, the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1997 and the Firearms (Amendment) (No. 2) Act 1997 were enacted, which effectively made private ownership of handguns illegal in the United Kingdom.

Port Arthur massacre (Australia)
April 1996. A killing spree in which 35 people were killed and 23 wounded, mainly at the historic Port Arthur prison colony, a popular tourist site in south-eastern Tasmania, Australia.
This account is quite detailed and it is so shocking and terrible to read and I couldn't manage to get through it without some tears. Gun politics in Australia was quite complicated with a lot of freedoms and rights on gun ownership like in USA, but they still managed to work toward an effective solution of restriction.

But how many times in the past two decades have incidents like this occurred in USA, with the usual 2nd Amendment right debates and no change. I doubt very much that when they passed the Bill of Rights in 1791 that they had any idea of the destructive power of the future invention of small automatic weapons, rivalling a battleship of those days. There are valid arguments for both sides, but the real goal should be to avoid incidents like Virginia Tech, Columbine, Colorado theatre, Newtown... How many more? How long must we sing this song? :(

^^^ never going to get past that 2nd amendment and with good reason too, the unsavory element still going to find arms and it's the citizen respectful of the law who gets abused...

Reporting bias in 'mentally ill' killers

Story Created: Dec 19, 2012 at 9:58 PM ECT

Story Updated: Dec 20, 2012 at 7:27 AM ECT

I have noticed a recent mass-media trend in light of the latest mass shooting in Connecticut, USA, that killed 27—20 of whom were children. I have noticed in most instances, that perpetrators were Caucasian males who were diagnosed by the mass media as "mentally ill".

Without undermining the severity or prevalence of mental and neurological disorders, it often makes me wonder "what if" the perpetrator were of another ethnicity or religious background, would the diagnosis be the same?

Recent perpetrators of mass human carnage, including the movie theatre shooting in Colorado in July or the Sikh temple shooting near Massachusetts in August, all carried the same mass-media rhetoric.

I am not specifically talking about the fact that if you perpetrate such an act, you have to be mentally ill (some may doubt this) but rather the "who" perpetrates it; would they also be deemed so? It then begs the question that if the perpetrator's background were Middle Eastern or of the Islamic faith, would they now be considered mentally ill or a terrorist?

The reason being that there are crimes of similar brutality that take place all the time by ethnic minorities in the inner cities of developed countries to the ghettoes, slums and villages of developing countries—yet the perpetrators of these crimes are said to have "no regard for the law or human life". It is almost as if the mass media diagnoses first then gathers information to "support" the symptoms rather than use the symptoms to diagnose afterwards.

One example that sheds light on this observation was the sniper shootings that took place ten years ago in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia where co-conspirator John Allen Muhhumad, a Muslim and former sniper in the US Army, was branded a terrorist, or of that nature, in some mass media outlets, with no allusion to possible mental illness, yet it is not uncommon for veterans to return from wars socially and psychologically withdrawn, suicidal, mentally ill or unstable. I noticed a careful reference to his military background only in highlighting his expertise with firearms and target accuracy.

The omnipresent and homologous news frames used by the mass media when reporting such tragedies should provoke discussions such as these more often.

The usa doesn't give a damn when their bombs drop and kill innocent children in the middle east....frankly i am glad its one of their own citizens who did it..Gun control?Nahhh they can ban assault weapons but they can't ban sub machine guns like the "mac-11" which can only be sold semi automatic in the states, nevertheless can be converted to full auto with half of hour machining...rip to all the children who dies from american bombs
